system.

2 a. A harmonic motion has a maximum velocity of 6m/s and it has a frequency of 12 cycles/sec.
Determine its amplitude its period and its maximum acceleration. (10 Marks)
b. A SDOF system of mass 9100kg with viscous damping is displaced from its position of rest
by a distance of 30mm. If the maximum displacement on return swing is 20mm on 0.5 sec.
determine the spring constant and the damping constant. (10 Marks)

3 a. Obtain the response of SODF system subjected to impulse loading as shown in Fig.Q3(a).

b. The shear frame (moment of inertia or the beam is very high) as shown in Fig.Q3(b) is
constructed of a rigid girder and flexible column. The frame supports uniformly distributed
load having a total weight of 2.5kN. The frame is subjected to an impulsive load of
triangular pulse at girder level. Determine the shear in the column. Take DMFmax = 1.25.

4 Derive the Fourier series expression for the given period loading function and write the
expression for the steady state response of an SDOF system. There are two phase in the

5 Find the natural frequencies and normal modes of the shear building as shown in Fig.Q5.

E = 206842.8 × 106N/m2, I1 = 1.98 ×10–4m4 , I2 = 1.46 ×10–4m4, I3 = 9.92 ×10–5m4.
