Week 7
Greenhouse gases!

Activity 1: What’s the Word?

Directions: Unscramble the words below and write the answer on the lines.
____________1. (DIXOE TIRNROUS) A Greenhouse gas released into the
atmosphere from farms that apply large amounts of nitrogen-based fertilizer to help
crops grow.
____________2. (TERWA POAVR) The most abundant greenhouse gas.
____________3. (ANETHEM) A greenhouse gas emitted during the production and
transport of coal, natural gas, and oil, also result from livestock and other agricultural
practices.
___________4. (ONOZE) Technically a greenhouse gas because it influences global
temperature. However, at stratosphere, ozone is needed to block harmful ultraviolet
light. In the troposphere, it is harmful to human health.
__________5.(BONSCAROROFLUCHLRO) Synthetic and powerful greenhouse gas
that is emitted from a variety of industrial processes

Activity 2: Choose Wisely!

Directions: Fill in the missing words with the word listed below.
AGRICULTURE FLOOD RAIN BURN
NATURAL WARM GREENHOUSE GASES GASES

(1.)_______________ cause the warming of the Earth.

The burning of (2.)___________resources such as coal and oil releases carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere. When we (3.) _________ too much of them, the (4.) ______
released (5.) __________the earth.
If the climate changes, there will be (6.)________ in some areas, and not enough
(7.)__________ will fall on others. This will have as serious effect on (8.)________

Target Competency: Identify the sources of greenhouses gases and relate them to greenhouse
gases . (S9ES-IIIf30.6.5)
Activity 3: Find my Match!
Directions: Match the picture with the cause or effect of climate change. Write the letter
only.

1. ___ 2.___ 3. _____ 4.___

A. Fossil Fuel burning E. Temperature is increasing

B. Drought F. Deforestation
C. Greenhouse effect G. Sea level is rising
D. Ice caps are melting

Activity 4: Niño vs Niña

Directions: Write the differences and similarities of El Niño and La Niño. Write the letter
of the answers inside the Venn diagram.

A. Last 9-12 months

B. Cooler water, less chance for clouds to form
C. Influence winter time atmospheric flow across the eastern North Pacific
D. Have abnormal ocean temperature in the Pacific
E. Warmer water temperatures
F. Can last 1-3 years
G. Powerful winds that push currents causes large amount of upwelling
H. Low winds that cause less upwelling
I. Brings violent storms like hurricanes

El Niño La Niña

Q3 Week 7 (Learning Activity Worksheet) Page 2 of 6
Target Competency: Differentiate El Nino and La Nina phenomena (S9ES-IIIf-30.6.7)
Activity 5: Modified True or False
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If false, change the
underlined word/s to make the statement correct. Write the answer on the blank.
1. The trade winds are weaker in the pacific during an El Niño event.__________
2. El Nino reduced upwelling of nutrient-rich water leading to less fish. ________
3. Hot water accumulates in the western part of the pacific during La Nina. _______
4. El Nino occurs every 3-7 years. _________
5. La Niña affects atmospheric pressure and temperature, rainfall, and ocean
temperature_______.

Activity 6: Concept Map.

Directions: Complete the concept map by supplying the information you learn from the
paragraph below.

What happens during EL Nino? During El Niño, air pressure rises in the western Pacific
and falls in the central and eastern Pacific. Without the strong pressure gradient, the
trade winds weaken. Without the trade winds, there is less upwelling near the coast of
South America and the warm and nutrient-poor water of the western Pacific spreads
east, piling up water in the eastern tropical Pacific. Not as much marine life can survive
in the warm water as can in the cool nutrient-rich waters. The warm water in the Pacific
evaporates faster than cool water, leading to more water vapor in the air which can
cause high humidity.

.Concept map focusing on how El Nino events impact (1) weather (2) wind (3)
evaporation (4) Ocean temperature, (5) upwelling and (6) air pressure.

__________- It rises in the Western Pacific

and drops in the eastern pacific

The _______ winds weaken

_______—There is less upwelling near

South America

Ocean temperature-______ spreads east

across the pacific

_________- There is more evaporation

_______- some places get cold and dry,

other places get warm and wet.
