Useful Collocations and Expressions

Where can people buy traditional products in your country?

Well, of course, there’s the run-of-the-mill souvenir shop that you can
get in every tourist spot or airport, or you can go to the point of origin.

I mean you go to the city or region where that particular product is

produced.

For example, Boddington’s beer is a traditional ale, only brewed in

Manchester, and if you go to that city,
you can visit the brewery, take a tour and pick up some samples of
the product, in the gift shop.

Would you say traditional products in your country today are high
quality?

To be honest, it’s a mixed bag.

If we take pottery, for example then yes, it’s top-notch.

We’ve got Stoke which is a city that is famous for its world-class
pottery, and the little ceramic tea pots are one of the most famous
items and they are all the rage now.

Of course, outside that city, there are lots of knock-o products (cheap
imitation) and fakes (counterfeit), and these tend to be cheap, low
quality, tacky products.

Most of them I would say are rubbish and a rip o (too expensive and
bad quality)

Do you think tourist souvenirs in your country are good examples
of traditional products?

No, far from it. (=Not at all)

In fact, nothing could be farther from the truth. (=Not at all)

If you look at your average souvenir shop,

the typical souvenirs you get are cheap, machine-produced artefacts

(items)

The last time I went into a souvenir shop, I think it was in London a
couple of years ago,

it was full of plastic cups, imsy caps, and tacky T-shirts that would
probably shrink (get smaller) the rst time you wash them.

That said, I think most people get that (understand that), they know
what they are buying and just want something to show they have been
there, a keepsake (a reminder - a souvenir), if you will.

I’d say to get good examples of traditional products, you have to travel
to the town or village that specialises in making that product.

Or if we are talking about local delicacies, just go to the local

supermarket, and you can get them there and then, probably much
cheaper to boot. (As an extra bonus)
