CMAS024/101/3/2023

Dear Student

As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a transformation
charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have also
placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information, curriculum
transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical
renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and
the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be
integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice
the implementation thereof in your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these
changes during your studies at Unisa.

1 INTRODUCTION
Welcome t o the m o d u l e CMAS024, the Geometry, Trigonometry and Analytical Geometry
part of the Programme.

This module will be delivered in a blended mode. For this module, you must work through the
Study guide. You should get yourself a file or workbook in which you should do ALL the
activities. You will find that some of the activities and examples deal with basic concepts. To
teach Mathematics in the FET Band, teachers should be aware of how basic concepts are
formed by learners in lower grades. For example, a teacher cannot teach the concept of
polyhedra if he or she is not aware of the basic concepts of polygons. Teachers must also
understand that it will be difficult to understand the basic concepts of the trigonometric
functions if they do not know what a trigonometric ratio is. Thus, the Study Guide
endeavours to take you back to many basic concepts which are necessary for the formation
of higher order thinking processes.

You will notice that the assignments contain many activities. Please start working immediately,
to make sure that you meet the deadlines for each assignment.

This tutorial letter (101/2023) provides you with some general information on the course and
studying through UNISA, your study material, examinations and most importantly, your
assignments.

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES

2.1 Purpose

The purpose of this Module 2: Mathematics Curriculum Studies II Geometry, Trigonometry and
Analytical Geometry is to:
 develop your geometric and trigonometric skills, make you aware of geometric
patterns, and to apply your geometric reasons and reflections on these concept. We also
3
want to extend your teaching practice by including some fresh and exciting principles so
that you will be able to develop the geometry and trigonometric skills of your learners.
• deepen your expertise in the field of Mathematics Education.
2.2 Outcomes

Outcomes of the module are: 

 to be able to explain what Geometry is and how it should be taught

 to be able to develop geometric reasoning through geometrical patterns and spatial

reflections

 to be able to discuss trigonometric functions and apply them in your ways of teaching
mathematics

 to be able to explain, develop and represent trigonometric functions and geometric

illustrations

3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION
Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response
to this charter, we have placed curriculum transformation high on the teaching and learning agenda.
Curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical
renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion
of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be integrated at both
programme and module levels as a phased-in approach. You will notice a marked change in the
teaching and learning strategy implemented by Unisa, together with how the content is conceptualised in
your modules. We encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa in a
responsive way within the framework of transformation.

6 STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

The Study @ Unisa website is available on myUnisa: www.unisa.ac.za/brochures/studies

This website has all the tips and information you need to succeed at Unisa.

6.1 First-Year Experience Programme @ Unisa

For many students, the transition from school education to tertiary education is beset with
anxiety. This is also true for first-time students to Unisa. Unisa is a dedicated open distance and
e-learning institution. Unlike face-to-face/contact institutions, Unisa is somewhat different. It is a
mega university and all our programmes are offered through a blended learning mode or fully
online learning mode. It is for this reason that we thought it necessary to offer first-time students
additional/extended support so that you can seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and
learning journey with little difficulty and few barriers. In this regard we offer a specialised student
support programme to students entering Unisa for the first time. We refer to this programme as
Unisa’s First-Year Experience (FYE) Programme. The FYE is designed to provide you with
prompt and helpful information about services that the institution offers and how you can access
information. The following FYE programmes are currently offered:

 FYE website: All the guides and resources you need to navigate through your first year at
Unisa can be accessed using the following link: www.unisa.ac.za/FYE

 FYE e-mails: You will receive regular e-mails to help you stay focused and motivated.

 FYE broadcasts: You will receive e-mails with links to broadcasts on various topics related to
your first-year studies (eg videos on how to submit assignments online).

 FYE mailbox: For assistance with queries related to your first year of study, send an e-mail
to fye@unisa.ac.za

7 STUDY PLAN
If you have enrolled for this course, you may well already be an experienced Mathematics
Teacher, or you may intend to teach mathematics literacy soon. You are probably aware of the
7
fact that mathematics consists of many different parts or facets. If you enrolled for the
certificate course, you would have to complete 4 modules, of which this is number one. Each
module focuses on different facets of the mathematics and mathematics teaching that you will
need to study.

The mathematics content that we base this course on is contained in the National Curriculum
Statement Grades 10 – 12 (General): Mathematical (NCS). You will find a copy of the NCS
document (which contains the CAPS information) on the CD, provided as part of the study
material. You need to be familiar with this mathematics content yourself to complete this
module. You should have access to a set of current mathematics school textbooks since you
may need them as references when you are completing your assignments for this course.

Study @ Unisa contains valuable information on where to begin with your studies. Please take
some time to read through the time frame suggested in this document. For this module it is
important to familiarize yourself with the official documentation published by the Department of
Education before you start with your studies.
I suggest that you note down the closing dates for all the assignments that you must submit this
year and compile a plan of study for each module according to the due dates

10 ACADEMIC DISHONENESTY
10.1 Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of taking the words, ideas and thoughts of others and presenting them as
your own. It is a form of theft which involves several dishonest academic activities, such as the
following:

 Cutting and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
 Not including or using incorrect references.
 Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.

10.2 Cheating

Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:

 Completing assessments on behalf of another student, copying from another student

during an assessment or allowing a student to copy from you.
 Using social media (eg WhatsApp, Telegram) or other platforms to disseminate
assessment information.
Submitting corrupt or irrelevant files.
 Buying completed answers from “tutors” or internet sites (contract cheating).
10.3 More information about plagiarism can be downloaded on the link below

11 STUDENT WITH DISABILITY

The Advocacy and Resource Centre for Student with Disability ARCSWiD) provides an
opportunity for staff to interact with new and returning students with disabilities.

 If you are a student with a disability and would like additional support or need additional
time for assessments, you are invited to contact Dr MM Masilo at masilmm@unisa.ac.za.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Study@Unisa brochure contains an A-Z guide of the most relevant information. Some
questions that students sometimes ask are:

10
CMAS024/101/3/2023

Question: I need extension of time for my assignment.

Answer: It is not possible to give more than one week extension of time. If you are compelled
by necessity to hand in one of the essay-type assignments late, you have to ask permission to
do so before the due date. No extension of time can be granted for multiple choice
assignments.

Question: I do not have Internet access.

Answer: You can access the Internet at all Unisa Regional Offices.
