SUBMITTED BY: Hamid Abi Detection Procedure: As the unknown sample was a solid compound, first, the combustion assay was carried out to detect whether it was an organic, inorganic or an organometallic substance. Hence, upon the conduction of this assay, as the complete burning of the substance was observed, and it completely turned into ashes, it came to light that it a pure organic substance. Proceeding to the next step, knowing the substance contained N and S, it had to be checked whether the substance belonged to primary aromatic amines, hydrochlorides, sulfates or other compounds, therefore, the test of solubility was carried out. Initially, solubility in water was checked and since it was insoluble in water, next, its solubility in dilute NaOH was checked and it was confirmed that it was soluble in dilute NaOH. Following this step, by referring to page 712 of Pharmacopeia, in order to detect the substance from the list in the page, assays of melting point and IR were conducted. First, the substance’s melting point was discovered to be almost 258 degrees, and then, its IR analysis confirmed the right corresponding wavelengths of the substance Acetazolamide. By having these two determining parameters in hand, the unknown sample was confirmed to be Acetazolamide.
