safety
– Equipment needing to be found for preventative
maintenance
• Shows exact location of equipment in the building

needed to be maintained to prevent product loss.

• Refer to the Corporate Refrigerator Monitoring Policy.

28
3. Staff Duress / Code White
• Staff duress badge is used to activate a Code White by pressing any
Infrared “eye” colored button for 2-3 seconds. LED feedback is not required
to successfully send location data. Vocera alert is sent to the Code White
Response Team.

• Badge must be worn HORIZONTALLY on a scrub top with the

infrared “eye” located on the side of the badge facing upward with the
coloured buttons visible.

• Consistent with Mackenzie policy, badges will be distributed to all F/T

and P/T staff working in patient care areas and other roles as needed.
There will be a badge sign-out process for casual staff through Security.

4. Hand Hygiene

• Staff should continue good infection control practices to reduce the

number of health-care associated infections and support our
commitment and culture of improving patient safety.

30
5. Infant Protection and Patient Wandering
• This RTLS system consists of computer software, patient security tags, and 3 types of
hardware:

– a) LF exciter with antenna – creates infrared field to detect tag presence

– b) Door controller – locks doors

– c) Card reader – CVH facility badge swipe at card reader clears the alarm

• The default security level is “Floor” for both infant and adult tags

31
5. Infant Protection and Patient Wandering
• Alarms:

▪ Door Ajar – a door is not latched closed for longer than 75 seconds. Alert is sent to Vocera

▪ Loiter – a tag remains in the sensor field for longer than 15 or 30 seconds depending on the door
(enabled only at public entrances to units)

▪ Unauthorized Egress – tag is detected through open doors. Alert is sent to Vocera

▪ Tag Tamper – band has been cut

• An audible alarm with message details and CCTV camera views will appear at the workstation for
