Empowering Youth for SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) – President says to

essay stakeholders.
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has advocated that the youth be
empowered to ensure the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to him, young people were at the heart of the SDGs framework and the goals
were an investment for children, youth, and future generations.
The SDGs are 17 goals aimed to create better ways of life without destroying the
environment and resources for the future.
The President, who was speaking at a ceremony to recognize the achievements of the 10
winners of the 2022 Junior Graphic National Essay competition (JGNEC) at the Jubilee
House in Accra, said young people could become a positive force for the SDGs if they
were given the knowledge and opportunities to thrive and be involved indecision-making
processes.
He, therefore, pledged the government’s commitment to provide quality education for all
youth across the country.
“We will continue to invest in the development of our educational system to ensure that
every child has access to the tools and resources needed to succeed. We will create an
environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and innovation in empowering our
youth to shape the destiny of our nation and our world,” he said.
Commendation: He commended the winners, noting that their essays did not only catch the
attention of the nation but had become an inspiration for countless others.
He also said this is just the beginning of their success story. And so they must all be proud
of their selves for the determination, passion, and hard work they have put into being named
as the best.

Urban waste pollution in the Korle Lagoon, Accra, Ghana.

The Korle Lagoon has become one of the most polluted water bodies in Ghana, serving as
a cesspool for most of Accra’s industrial and municipal wastes. Due to the lack of sanitation
facilities in various communities in the immediate area, people continue to use the isolated
bushes along the lagoon for open range defecation. Waste discharges including industrial
wastes are the major sources of pollution.
The Korle Lagoon is the major basin into which the greater proportion of the flood waters
of Accra flow before entering the sea. The Lagoon receives discharges from three main
sources (i.e Odaw River and the two major drains on its eastern and western sections).
These major drains are mostly uncovered and usually collect silt which are transported into
the Lagoon.
Causes
• The increasing pollution of Korle Lagoon is a result of the rapid urbanization of Accra.
(Enhanced by the facilities and job opportunities in Accra). This has resulted in
considerable stress on the already inadequate urban facilities including the housing and
basic sanitation amenities.
• Poverty remains the primary cause of the pollution in the Korle Lagoon. The catchment
areas are poor. They lack basic sanitation facilities, such as toilets and refuse collection
points.
• Another source of Korle Lagoon pollution is from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and
Polyclinic.
Accra Waste Management Department has put measures to collect waste so that much is
not dumped in drains and water bodies.
