“How can we integrate Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) in the subject

Principles of Steel and Timber Design?”

Building robust infrastructure, encouraging equitable and sustainable

industrialization, and stimulating innovation are the three main objectives of
Sustainable Development Goal 9. However, inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable
cities and human settlements are the focus of Sustainable Development Goal 11. We
can integrate these objectives into the Principles of Steel and Timber Design course
by stressing the value of utilizing sustainable materials, such as wood, in urban
infrastructure projects in order to support SDG 9's objective of creating resilient
infrastructure. Furthermore, by building inclusive, secure, and sustainable cities, the
integration of sustainable urban planning and design concepts into building projects
may help to achieve the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 11.

SDG 9 emphasizes the use of sustainable techniques, like reusing resources,

maximizing material consumption, and putting in place energy-efficient
manufacturing processes, in the planning and building of steel and timber structures.
Furthermore, in order to lessen the influence on the environment and increase
resource efficiency, place an emphasis on innovation in building methods and
materials.

On the contrary, SDG 11 emphasizes that compact, effective, and resilient

cities are encouraged by the design of steel and timber structures, which will support
sustainable urban development. Throughout the design process, take into account
elements like disaster resilience, transit accessibility, and urban density. Prioritize
using materials that are sourced locally as well in order to lower transportation-related
emissions and boost regional economy.

Through the alignment of Principles of Steel and Timber Design with

Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 11, practitioners may design structures that are
safe, efficient, and ecologically responsible while also making a positive impact on
sustainable development.
