ENG101 Oral Presentation Guidelines

Week 13

As the presentation task of module 3, you will present one case where a company or industry has
manipulated scientific information for its own benefit.

1. Find examples of companies/corporations/industries that have manipulated scientific findings. Look for
cases where their actions have had significant consequences. You may pick cases from various fields,
such as medicine, farming, energy, or the environment.

2. Choose one company/corporation/industry that has engaged in manipulating scientific evidence or

hiding unfavorable research outcomes.

3. For the chosen example, explain the background, reasons, and methods behind the manipulation
of science. Look into how they funded biased research, selectively published information, spread
disinformation, or influenced regulatory processes. Analyze the impact of these actions on public health,
consumer safety, the environment, and the integrity of scientific research.

4. Use visuals like graphs, charts, or examples of manipulated scientific studies to support your
presentation and make it more engaging.

This may be an individual or paired presentation. For individual presentations, the duration can be
about 4 minutes. For paired presentations, each speaker should still speak for the same length of
time.

Here are a few examples of companies that you can use to explore the topic of manipulating science:
1. The tobacco industry and smoking-related research
2. Monsanto and GMOs
3. Volkswagen and diesel emissions
4. Pharmaceutical companies and clinical trials
5. Climate change denial
6. The sugar industry and its health effects
7. Lead industry and lead poisoning
8. Chemical industry and environmental impact
9. Fast food industry and nutrition
10. The oil industry and climate change research

Pick and appropriate slot and write your name(s).
