COLOUR:

An object’s chromatic quality

Colour has 3 main characteristics:


• Hue: The name of the colour
• Saturation: How bright or dull a colour is
• Value: How light or dark a colour is

Colour Combinations:
• Primary: red, blue, yellow
• Secondary: orange, green, purple
• Tertiary: blue/green, red/orange, yellow/orange, etc. (mix of primary and it’s closest
secondary)
• Cool Colours: colours associated with cold things; any colours in the families of blue,
purple, and green
• Warm Colours: colours associated with heat and fire; any colours in the families of
yellow, orange, and red
• Complementary Colours: colours directly opposite on the colour wheel. ie.
blue/orange; purple/yellow; red-orange/blue-green

COLOUR ACTIVITY
Colour - Activity #1

We start out using colored pencils to explore


blending and color theory focusing on color
temperature. Use the examples and the colour
wheel to help you!

PART A:

1) On one page of your sketchbook, write


‘Blending Complementary Colours’.
2) You’ll create THREE 1x2 inch rectangles
(see the example attached)

PART B:

1) Write ‘Colour Temperature’ on the same page or on a new page.


2) Create SIX 0.5x2 inch rectangles (see example attached)
Colour - Activity #2

On one page of your sketchbook draw a circle. You’ll


create a sphere using ONE combination of colour
temperatures.

For highlights use white. For shadows, mix the


complementary colours together.
