Looking at each anime one by one and merging
Knowledge of similar answers. For that I used close.py and
anime series
report
1. About
This survey and report were made by fan for fans
with help of fans. It can be used by anyone who
wishes, free of charge. If you do use it, it’d be
cool if you mentioned where you got it, but it’s
not required.
Most submissions came from people on r/anime
as it’s one of most popular and known anime-
centered communities.
All scripts I made are available on gitlab
(https://gitlab.com/halftough/analysis-scripts).
2. Data processing
In this chapter I’m describing how I handled data.
If you’re not interested in this process, skip to
next chapter.
First I change all characters to lowercase.
Next I run simple filter (whitechar.py) to remove
all white characters at end or begin of any answer.
Thanks to this „Naruto” and „Naruto „ will be
treated as the same answer. At the same time I
removed any „?” on the end of the line – a lot of
people ended answers with question marks. Same
with dots and exclamation points etc. Run filter
few times to remove combinations of above (such
as „naruto !?”) –I could make better filter instead,
but that would take more time.
After that I listed most common answers, search
them for entries like „IDK”, „?”, „donno”, etc.
and remove them (all.py).
Also if answer ends with any of above, cut it.
Removing every answer containing word
„generic” is also good idea.
bycol.py which are explained on gitlab. At this
point I also picked all responses I found
interesting.
Throw away troll submissions (bad answers on
purpose, very rude answers and such. Good
wholesome jokes stay) and some of the too jokey
– ones where it was too difficult to say whether
someone knows the show or not (saved some
responses though). Those don’t count as right or
wrong, but aren’t taken into account at all.
I only removed whole submissions in extreme
cases, some jokes, strong language or
complaining about “moetrash” or whatever won’t
make whole vote invalid.
Next using empty.py I removed submissions that
ended up being empty after previous changes and
examined the ones that were suspiciously close to
being empty (I keep first version of database, so I
can see how it looked before all the merging and
removing bad ones). With this I got rid of more
troll submissions and folks that who got bored
after few guesses, but send me answers anyway.
All statistics were calculated using RKWard,
because I can’t afford SPSS.
3. What counts and what
doesn’t
At first I wanted to have separate category for
answers that aren’t exactly right, but near enough,
but because I got too much submissions I dropped
the idea. Now I either count given answer or
don’t.
In general I count all answers that make it obvious
they know what show they are talking about.
Titles with typos will be counted same way as
titles written correctly. I count correct descriptions
or jokes relying on knowing show.
I didn’t count answers implying person knew
series, but didn’t give any information about it,
like “my favorite anime”, “most overrated show” 4. List from most to least
and such.
