Phytochemical

Medicinal plants are rich source of novel drugs that forms the ingredients in traditional

system of medicines, modern medicines, nutraceuticals, food supplements, folk medicines,

pharmaceutical intermediates, bioactive principles and lead compounds in synthetic drugs

(Ncube 2008). Medicinal plants contain several phytochemicals such as flavonoids, alkaloids,

tannins, and terpenoids, which possess antimicrobial and antioxidant properties (Talib &

Mahasneh, 2010).

Phytochemicals are nonnutritive plant-based bioactive components that have disease-

preventive properties; they are not essential nutrients and are produced by plants (Prakash,

2020). Phytochemicals are defined as bioactive nutrient plant chemicals in fruits, vegetables,

grains, and other plant foods that may provide desirable health benefits beyond basic nutrition to

reduce the risk of major chronic diseases (Liu, 2004, as cited in Therapeutic Foods, 2018).

Medicinal plants have bioactive compounds which are used for curing of various human diseases

and also play an important role in healing. Phytochemicals have two categories ie, primary and

secondary constituents. Primary constituents have chlorophyll, proteins sugar and amino acids.

Secondary constituents contain terpenoids and alkaloids. Medicinal plants have antifungal,

antibacterial and anti-inflammation activities. The present study involves ten different medicinal

plants Acacia nilotica, Psidium gujauva, Luffa cylindrical, Morus alba, Morus nigra, Momordica

charantia, Fagonia cretica, Punica granatum, Ficus palmate and Prunus persica locally available

in Mardan region of Pakistan. The leaves of the selected medicinal plants were washed, air dried

and then powdered. The aqueous extract of leaf samples was used for the phytochemical analysis
to find out the phytochemical constituents in the plants. It is clear that phytochemicals of

plant are essential therapeutic agents for treating human illnesses. In the study of Velavan et al.

(2007), phytochemicals are classified as primary or secondary constituents, depending on their

role in plant metabolism.
