NAME OF APPLICATION SOFTWARE: C-MAP SOFTWARE

INTRODUCTION:
The CMAP software, short for Concept Mapping, is a tool used for visualizing and
organizing knowledge and ideas in a graphical format. It helps users to create conceptual
diagrams that represent relationships between various concepts, aiding in brainstorming,
problem-solving, and decision-making processes.

HISTORY /EVOLUTION:
The concept mapping technique was first developed by Joseph D. Novak and his
research team in the 1970s at Cornell University. Over the years, the concept mapping approach
has evolved, leading to the development of various software tools to facilitate the creation and
manipulation of concept maps. CMAP software is one such tool that emerged from this evolution.

DEVELOPER:
The CMAP software was developed by the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition
(IHMC), a research institute located in Pensacola, Florida. IHMC focuses on advancing the

understanding of human and machine intelligence and applying this knowledge to improve
various aspects of society.

FEATURES:
 Concept Mapping: The core feature of CMAP software is the ability to create concept
maps, allowing users to visually represent their ideas and the relationships between
them.
 Collaboration: CMAP software enables collaborative concept mapping, allowing multiple
users to work on the same concept map simultaneously, fostering teamwork and idea
sharing.
 Customization: Users can customize the appearance of their concept maps by adjusting
colors, fonts, shapes, and other visual elements to suit their preferences or specific
requirements.
 Export and Sharing: Concept maps created with CMAP software can be exported in
various formats, such as image files or structured data formats, making it easy to share
them with others or integrate them into presentations or documents.
 Integration: CMAP software may offer integration with other tools or platforms, allowing
users to import data from external sources or export concept maps to compatible
software for further analysis or processing.

VERSION AND DESCRIPTION:

As of the latest available information, the current version of CMAP software is version
X.XX. Each new version typically introduces improvements, bug fixes, and new features based on
user feedback and advancements in technology. The exact description of version X.XX would
depend on the specific updates and changes implemented in that release.

APPLICATION USED:
CMAP software finds applications in various fields, including education, research,
business, and project management.

2. Answer the following in your own understanding.

General Directions
 Read and understand each statement carefully.
 Write the questions and your answers on your activity sheet.

Answer the following

1. What is Application software and give its importance?

Application software refers to programs designed for specific tasks, unlike system
software which manages computer hardware. It includes productivity tools like word processors,
multimedia software for editing photos and videos, educational programs, games, business
software for managing finances, and communication tools like email and social media. Application
software is crucial for various aspects of modern life. It enhances productivity through specialized
tools, improves communication and collaboration via real-time interaction, facilitates enriched
learning experiences, streamlines business operations by automating tasks, and enables creative
expression and entertainment through multimedia and recreational activities.

2. Differentiate Custom software to Open Source Software?

Custom software is tailored to specific needs, while open-source software is developed
collaboratively. Custom software typically has a proprietary license, while open-source software is
licensed openly. Custom software often involves higher upfront costs, whereas open-source
software is usually available for free or with minimal fees. Custom software offers maximum

customization, while open-source software allows for flexibility through code modification. Support
for custom software is usually provided by developers or vendors, whereas support for open-
source software may come from the community or commercial vendors.

3. What are the importance of database in an organization?

Databases are crucial for organization as they manage data centrally, ensuring its security and
integrity. They help analyze data, improve efficiency, and support scalability. Databases also
ensure business continuity and compliance with regulations. By using databases effectively,
organizations can harness their data's full potential and gain a competitive advantage in today's
data-focused business world.

4. Differentiate Packaged software to Freeware Software?

Packaged software and freeware software differ in cost, licensing, development, support, and
customization. Packaged software requires purchasing a license with additional fees, while
freeware is free. Packaged software uses proprietary licenses, while freeware is distributed under
open-source licenses. Packaged software is developed by specific companies, while freeware is
collaboratively developed. Packaged software usually includes vendor support, while freeware
relies on community support. Packaged software may have limited customization, while freeware
allows extensive customization.

5. Differentiate Web Application to Shareware Software?

Web Application:

 Accessible through a web browser.

 Typically runs on remote servers.
 Users access the application via the internet.
 Examples include Gmail, Facebook, and Google Docs.

Shareware Software:

 Installed directly on a user's computer.

 Often distributed with limited functionality or a trial period.
 Users can purchase a license to unlock full features.
 Examples include WinRAR, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and many mobile apps with in-app
purchases.

6. Discuss how to install application software?

 Insert the CD/DVDA or USB flash drive to your computer where installer of the
application software is located.
 Select and open the CD/DVD or USB flash drive where the installer are located.
 Click and open the setup of the installer.
 Click all the positive sides in installation.
 Restart the computer in order to install properly and to refresh the system.
