Let’s Explore and Discover
Did you know?

Application Software is a type of computer program that performs a specific

personal, educational, and business function. Each
program is designed to assist the
user with a particular process, which may be related to productivity, creativity, and/or
communication. These application software programs are created to facilitate a variety of
functions, including but not limited to:
• Managing information
• Manipulating data
• Constructing visuals
• Coordinating resources
• Calculating figures

Examples of Application Software:

• Microsoft suite of products(Office, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook
• Internet browsers like Firefox, Safari, and Chrome
• Mobile pieces of software such as Pandora (for music appreciation, Skype
(for real-time online communication) and Slack (for team collaboration

There are different categories of application software depending on the preference of

the user. It can be Productivity Tools (e.g. Microsoft Office Apps) , Games (e.g. LAN or
ONLINE games) or Utility Software (e.g. Anti-Virus, Diagnostic/Repair Apps &
Virtualization software)

Important Note: The installation process for software depends on your operating
system and the program you are installing. As a result of these many combinations,
below are the general guidelines in doing the installation.

GENERAL GUIDELINES IN INSTALLING APPLICATION SOFTWARES

1. Make sure your computer meets the system requirements of the program,
game, or utility you are attempting to install

System requirements are the minimum necessary specifications that you will
need to make sure that the software runs smoothly and does not overwork the
hardware on your computer. If your computer does not meet these requirements,
you may not be able to install the software or, if you can install the software, it may
run slowly. The system requirements for software are usually printed on the
package that the software comes in or are listed on the software’s website.

(Source: Siyavula. “Basic System Requirements” Accessed date: Jan. 23, 2021,

https://intl.siyavula.com/read/cat/grade-11-cat/hardware-software-and-computer management/05-
hardware-software-and-computer-management)

2. The manual, or a README file, usually contains instruction on how to

install a program. Find it online at a software website, or in a text file in the
same directory as the installation files.

Once you have downloaded the software or inserted disk, the installation
wizard will guide you through what to do. While the installation wizard does not
handle all the aspects of the installation, since these may be different from one
program to next, the process is very similar for all software.

COMMON STEPS IN SOFTWARE APPLICATION INSTALLATION

STEP DESCRIPTION
Accept the license agreement Most software cannot complete the
installation if you don’t agree to the
manufacturer’s terms of use. This license
agreement is a legally binding contract
between you and the manufacturer and
outlines what you can do and cannot do
with the software.

Enter the key/ activation code/ registration The product key is the way to the
number manufacturer’s links the software to you,
stops the software from being installed on
more devices than the licensing terms
agree to and prevents piracy. It also link
you to any online support.

4
Choose the installation location The installer will suggest a default folder.
It is usually best to stick to this
suggestion. For example, if your installer
suggests installing all your software on
the C:/ drive, you will know where to look
for a program.

Choose the type of installation you want You can usually choose between the
following types of installation:
• Typical installation, which installs
the components that are used most
often,
• Custom installation, where you can
choose which components to
install, and;
• Full installation, which installs all
the components of the software.
This is not always an option in an
installation.
Install extras Some software comes with extra software
bundled in. in this step you can choose
which extra software to install. Often
these extras are ticked by default and
you will have to untick them if you don’t
want to install them.

Check for updates Once a program has installed, the

installer may ask if you want to check
for the latest version. This is usually
done with software that is installed from
a disk. Downloaded software is often
more up to date.

Register your product Some programs require that you register

on their online portal so that the

5
company can contact you wth news and
notifications of updates. You should be
allowed to skip this step if you do not
want to be contacted by the
manufacturer.

Add short cuts The last step in the installation process

is to add a shortcut. Most software will
ask if you want a shortcut to the
program on your desktop. If you do not,
deselect this option.

Take a tour Some software offers a tutorial the first

time you open the program. These
tutorials will usually highlight important
features and how to use them. If it is the
first time you are using the specific
program, you should work through the
tutorial before getting started.

• Installing Application Software Via CD-Rom

➢ Many software titles, games, and utilities have an AutoPlay feature. This
feature automatically starts a setup screen for the software when the CD or
DVD is inserted. If your program contains this feature, follow the steps that
appear after inserting the disc into the computer.

➢ If AutoPlay is disabled on your computer or unavailable on the software

disc, follow these steps:
1. Open My Computer.
2. In the My Computer window, open the drive that contains the
installation files. For example, if the files are on the CD-ROM drive,
open the D: drive or letter of your CD-ROM drive .
3. In the drive that contains your files, locate either the
executable setup (i.e., "setup.exe") or install file.
Doubleclicking this file starts the installation process. If there
are multiple setup or install files, locate the executable file or
double-click each setup or install file until you find the file that
starts the installation.

• Installing Application Software Via Downloading from the Internet

➢ The most common way to get new software is to download it from the internet.
To do this, you must go to the website where the software is available and

6
download the files. Make sure that you download software from trusted
publishers or verified retailers only. Follow these steps:
1. Download the program from the website providing program.
2. Open the Download folder
3. If the file you downloaded is an executable file, double-click the file
icon to start the setup process. If the downloaded file is
compressed (e.g. zip), you must extract the file’s contents before
setup can begin. Fortunately, this function is built into most
versions of Windows.
4. Once the file is extracted, double-click the setup or install file to
install the program.

• Installing Application Software Via USB flash drive

➢ Open Windows Explorer or My Computer and find the USB drive that is
often the last drive letter. Find the setup or executable file, and double-
click the file icon to start the setup process.

3. If you have problems in installing software, or it takes a long time, close or

disable any other running programs.

4. After installing a new program, if it prompts you to reboot the computer, do

so.
