Unit 14: Installing and Maintaining Computer Hardware

Due: 21/03/22

Submitted by: Bradley emmens Lecturer: Don Jenkins

Introduction

The assignment is to investigate and understand the computer hardware required for different
systems and explain the benefits and implications of alternative/new hardware installations and
the associated maintenance required.

The benefits and implication of installing an SSD over an HDD

 Benefits
1. SSD are faster and more power efficient hard drive.
2. A Solid-State Drives reads up to 10 times faster and writes up to 20 times faster than a
normal Hard Disk Drive.
3. HDD are priced lower.
4. SSD weigh less and doesn’t make noise and are more durables than HDD.
5. HDDs have a longer lifespan than SSD.
6. HDDs have a large storage base capacity.

 Implications
1. Normal HDD are less durable than SSDs.
2. HDDs relies on moving parts the disk surface can be damaged.
3. HDDs have heavy power consumptions and are noisy.
4. SSDs are more expensive than HDDs.
5. Due to the unique file system structure of an SSD data extractions can be difficult.

1
The benefits and implications of North Wiltshire Environmental installing and
maintaining hardware themselves

 It’s cheaper to build your own hardware than to have someone else do it, there are less
problems in building equipment and it makes sure that the hardware is built to the
correct specifications.

 The person building the system must be experienced in PC building if someone is not
experienced there could be problems with the hardware, security maybe at risk, saving
money at the cost of the probability of it not working.

Review of how installing and maintaining hardware for one technology system could
impact an individual or an organization

By installing a new system, the organization must remember that some components will need
replacing and it is important to keep a stock of components, it would mean having to employ a
member of staff to deal with all hardware machine problems.

2
The strengths and weaknesses of system 1

Dell OptiPlex 3020

 Strengths: Easy to deploy and manage.

 Weaknesses: It has less storage.

Intel Core i5-4590

 Strengths: this is a good choice for budget and is a good graphics processor.
 Weaknesses: I’ve looked at reviews online and can’t find any weaknesses.

4gb drr3 ram

 Strengths: it is recommended to uses 4gb ram for all application.

 Weaknesses: I’ve looked online and can’t find any weaknesses.

500gb 5400rpm

 Strengths: it is faster than a traditional HDD.

 Weaknesses: it is inconsistent depending on real world conditions.

DVD burner drive

 Strengths: Burn what you want on a blank cd.

 Weaknesses: it isn’t possible to overwrite data burned on to it.

Sceptre E205W-1600 20" LED Monitor 1600x900

 Strengths: it has HDMI support, 5milisecond response time and built-in speakers.
 Weaknesses: the monitor uses a TN panel which suffers poor viewing angles, and the
colors won’t be vivid or consistent on the monitor.

LOGITECH MK120 Keyboard & Mouse Set

 Strengths: the keyboard and mouse are comfortable and efficient to use, and the keys
are silent when you press them.
 Weaknesses: I looked online, but I couldn’t find any weaknesses.

3
The strengths and weaknesses of system 2

Dell Optiplex 780

 Strengths: it is energy efficient.

 Weaknesses: I looked online and can’t find any weaknesses.

Intel core 2 duo E7500

 Strengths: It has a clock speed of 2.9GHz.

 Weaknesses: it is underperforming for heavy multitasking and productivity.

2gb ddr2 ram

 Strengths: it operates external data twice as fast as DDR.

 Weaknesses: it is old and is rare to find nowadays.

250gb Seagate barracuda 7200rpm

 Strengths: it is fast and reliable.

 Weaknesses: I looked at reviews online and couldn’t find any weaknesses.

CD/DVD rom drive

 Strengths: it is small and portable.

 Weaknesses: it is fragile and easy to snap or scratch.

17” TFT LCD monitor 1280x1024

 Strengths: it has high resolution and excellent contrast performance.

 Weaknesses: the LCD screen has a limited temperature range.

LOGITECH MK120 Keyboard & Mouse Set

 Strengths: the keyboard and mouse are comfortable and efficient to use, and the keys
are silent when you press them.
 Weaknesses: I looked online, but I couldn’t find any weaknesses.
