Q.1 There lies a great difference between textbook medicine and a world of practicing
physician. Discuss?
Ans. Normally the medicines prescribed in the textbooks are used by the practicing
physicians. However in extreme cases of emergency the physician experience,
resourcefulness and practical approach become for more important than the theoretical
knowledge. For example a victim of burn injury, snake bite or suffocation through
drowning and immediate help. The nearest available doctor many not have all the facilities
needed for the case. In such a situation , first aid is a must to save the patient’s life before
rushing him to the hospital for proper care with limited resources at his command, the
practicing physician exercises all his practical experience to control the damage through
the minimum and check the victim state from further deterioration. A stitch in time thus
save life in such cases. The practical help comes as a boon.

Q.2 Who was Joe Morgan? Why he had been waiting for Dr. Andrew Manson?
Ans. Joe Morgon was a dealer in Blanelly a mining town, He was a big ,strong and his wife
Susan who has been married nearly twenty years were expecting their first child . joe was
waiting for the doctor to help Susane in the delivery of the child.

Q.3 What efforts did Andrew make to revive the new born baby?
Ans. First, he laid a child upon a blanket and gave it hot artificial respiration. Then he dip
the child alternatively in hot and cold water. After that he rubbed the slippery child with a
rough towel. He pressed and released his chest till it began to breath and gave a cry.

Q.4 No matter what your profession is , Moral values always play an important role in
making you a complete human being. Explain with reference to the chapter ‘Birth’?
Ans. One of the most challenging and complex of lives areas is the real of moral issues and
decision. Every day of our life in whatever profession we may be, we make moral choice
and decision s that reflect our own moral orientation. In the chapter ‘Birth’, Dr. Andrew
considered in his moral duty to attend to a patient inspite of his mental agency is saving
two lives. He used all his knowledge as wella s instincts to revive the child and finally
succeed in making the family happy in the end,he emerged as a distinct human being who
went all out to save all life not out oft reat but because he considered it his moral duty to
do his best. His efforts were applauded and he himself indulged himself appraisal on doing
something really good. His moral values helped him achieving defeat.

Q.5 For doctors the duty towards the patient is foremaost irrespective of their own personal
affairs. Discuss with reference to the chapter ‘Birth’?
Ans. There is a saying that ‘after God , it is only a doctor who can save the life of someone.’
A patient comes to a doctor with hope that he would cure his/her illness. But we should not
forget that a doctor is a humanbeing. Troubles and miseries are part of his life also. Doctor
can also feel distressed and depressed. Inspite of all this a doctor has to trest his.her duty at
the formost priority.
We show in the chapter how Dr, Andrew made frantic efforts to save the lives of Mrs.
Susan Morgan and her child. Dr. Andrew also used his intuition and medical knowledge
the lifless child where was no hope.
Though he was really upset before coming to Joe Morgan’s house. Dr. Andrew stayed there
as the case demanded all his attention. He could barely see his own future but was diligent
enough to realize his call of duty. Hence, we can say that even though being preoccupied
with his own personal affairs, he didn’t forget his duty and made several attempt to succeed.

Q.6 Dr. Andrew had no idea that this particular night wuld influence his future carreer in
Blaenelly. How did it do so?
Ans. When Dr. Andrew accompanied Joe Morgan at midnight he had no idea that this
particular night would affect his whole future career. The doctor did his best to save Susan
Morgan and he revived the child to give a fresh lease of life to the family. Doctor Andrew’s
efforts were really commendable and shaped his future.

Q.7 Dr. Andrew was good enough to wait at Joe Morgan’s house till everything was over.
Why did he decide this?
Ans. Dr. Andrew had reached Joe Morgan’s house at midnight. He was distressed and upset.
He knew that if he went back home, he would not be able to sleep even for an hour. Though
he needed much rest and sleep even for an hour. Though he needed much rest and sleep.
Moreover as the case was complicated and needed all his attention he decided to remain
there until everything was over.

Q.8 Why was Dr. Andrew suddenly startled as the old woman addressed him? What was the
old woman thinking of when she talk to Dr, Andrew?
Ans. Dr. Andrew was absorbed in his thoughts about marriage and relationships. The old
woman was much concerned about her daughter and the baby she was going to deliver. SO
the old woman told Dr. Andrew that her daughter did not want chlorofoam if it would harm
the baby. Due to sudden disturbance in his thoughts. Dr. Andrew was startled.

Q.9 What did Dr. Andrew shiver with horror?


Ans. After a long harsh struggle for nearly an hour the baby was born unfortunately, it
appeared lifeless, a shiver of horror passed over Dr. Andrew.
He thought of all the promise that he had made to Mr. Joe Morgan and his family. SO much
had been expected of him but he failed. The realization made him shiver with horror.

Q.10 Why was Dr. Andrew in a state of conflict when the child was born?
Ans. Dr. Andrew was in a state of conflict as he was torn between two situations. The
dilemma before him was whether to safe the mother first or her child. The dilemma was so
urgent that he couldn’t solve it consciously.

Q.11 What efforts did Andrew made to safe the lifeless looking boy at birth?
Ans. When Dr. Andrew saw the lifeless looking boy, he realized that the boys whiteness
meant that he was suffering from Asthyxiapallida, which required a particular method of
revival so he began a special method of respiration in this regard, he alternatively plunged
the child into a basin of icy water followed by plunging him into very hot water repeatedly.
Then in one last desperate effort he rubbed the boy’s crushing and realising his chest, trying
to get breathe into his limb ,body. Suddenly the childs chest started going up and down,
some mucus came out of its nose and finally the boy gave a cry.
Q.12 What ws the condition of the room after Dr. Andrew had saved both the mother and
the child?
Ans. The room was in a mess, full of soiled newspapers, towels,blankets and soiled
instruments, the floor was full of mud and water, as the doctor has used two basins full of
water. The hypodermic syringe was stuck in the linoleum on the floor . The jug was
knocked over and the kettle on its side. On the huddled bed the mother was lying
unconscious.

Q.13 Compare and contrast Andrew’s emotional , mental and physical state at the beginning
of the story and end.
Ans. At the beginning of the story Andrew is physically tired and emotionally upset. He has
just returned from disappointing evening with Chrisitine. The girl he loved. His thoughts
are heavy and muddled. The episode he had witnessed at Cardiff station still filled his mind
with sadness. Though he thought of marriage as a blissful state , he could not help
remembering the miserable failure of many marriages. At the end of the story, Andrew is
physically exhausted but emotional cheerful and mentally alert. His mind is filled with joy
and self satisfaction. He has performed an unusual fit, no less thana miracle. He calls upon
God as witness that he has done something real at last. This sense of achievement helped
him to overcome physical fatigue. His sense of duty toward his patient helps him to attend
them whole heartedly. He forgets his personal feels and thinks only of reviving the patient.
