SECOND TERM EXAMINATION 2023/ 2024 SESSION
SUBJECT: ENGLISH STUDIES CLASS: JS2
SECTION A: OBJECTIVES

Read this passage carefully and use it to answer question 1- 5.

Gender refers to the sum of cultural values, attitudes, role practices and characteristics
based on sex. Gender also reflects and perpetuates particular power relations between men
and women. It refers to the social interpretation of what it means to be female or male. Gender
is the condition of being masculine or feminine through one's behaviour. One is born and
labelled male or female biologically, but one learns how to be masculine or feminine.

Gender identity is socially derived. Gender identity is formed through socialization and not
biology. It is determined by cultural beliefs about what it means to be a man or woman in each
society. Gender identity changes overtime, reflecting social realities in a given community.

Roles considered appropriate for males or females in a culture is a cluster of socially defined
expectations that people of one gender are expected to fulfil. However changes in gender roles
do occur. Religion, family structure, politics, economic conditions, education, laws and traditions
influence them. Many roles are culturally determined. Both boys and girls need help sorting out
how gender role expectations affect their behaviours in relationships, leisure, activities and
careers.

Instruction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.

Sometimes, drugs are not used as they are meant to be used. This is drug abuse. Drug
abuse refers to the use of drugs not medically prescribed.

3
Drug abuse can occur when they are taken in excess (overdose) or lower than what is
prescribed (under dose). It also includes non-completion of recommended dosage (skipping) as
well as taking illegal drugs for stimulation and excitement.

The most commonly abused drugs in Nigeria are marijuana (Indian hemp), heroin,
cocaine, antibiotics, analgesics e.g paracetamol, aspirin. Others include alcohol, tobacco,
kolanuts, etc. Due to cultural practices, alcohol, tobacco and kolanuts are abused in many parts
of the country.

Drug abuse can lead to a more serious condition called addiction. Drug addiction is a
situation where a person cannot do without a drug. He therefore becomes an addict.

However, one may become involved in drug abuse through associating oneself with bad
friends or company as well as imitating one's bad friends.

Consequently, the wrong use of drugs or substances may have harmful effects on the
health of users and non users alike. It can lead to such ugly situations as family breakdown e.g
