HEY Y’ALL,
IT’S JEFFERSON.
You're here because you want to hold your ground,
even when conversations get heated.
- Jefferson
Example: “I will not be yelled at,” or “I will not be spoken to that way.” Make your
boundary crystal clear.
You’re letting them know they’ve crossed a boundary. Plus, the low volume of your
response makes you sound more controlled and pulls their volume back down.
By using this phrase, you're saying that you have your perspective and they have their
perspective. And because you aren’t where they are, you don’t see what they see.
For example, “I’ll get back to you when I’m ready,” or “I’ll address this topic when I’m
ready.” It’s a reminder that your needs drive the schedule. Not the other way around.
You’re saying that you’re here for constructive talk, but not at the cost of your peace.
It shifts the choice back to them. They can either respect your boundary or you will
stop the conversation.
When you say this, you’re not giving up on what you believe. You’re saying, “I hear you
and recognize we don't see eye-to-eye on this.” It signals that you respect their
opinion, even though it doesn't change your own.
Instead of getting defensive, calmly assert yourself and say, “I get to decide that.”
It's a reminder to both of you that the only person who gets to decide how you feel
is you.
As you use these phrases in your daily conversations, watch how you
become more assertive, calm, and respectful while handling arguments.
