The Federal Minimum Wage Is Set To

Rise In April. Here’s what Canadians
need to know

Summarization

The article states that the federal government in Ontario will increase the
minimum wage for federal workers each year, which is in line with the average
annual inflation rate for the previous calendar year. On April 1st, 2024, Bank,
postal services, telecommunications, international, interprovincial air, railway
road, and marine transportation workers are examples of workplaces that will
be getting the sixty-cent increase. The government says that federal workers
are allowed to have a higher pay than the average worker in Ontario. Another
point that was made is that the average worker in Ontario needs to make at
least $18.65 to $25.05 per hour to get by in daily life. The topic of what the
minimum wage should be an Ontario has been in issue because the average
worker needs to catch up, resorting to local food banks, and using public
transportation.

Reactions

My perspective on the minimum wage being raised for

federal workers is that although they deserve a raise, I
don’t feel the average worker in Ontario should have a
lower pay rate. I agree that the average worker who
works full time is barely getting by, and it's discouraging
to see people work tirelessly to provide for themselves
and/or their families struggling to make ends meet.
Suppose it’s known that the minimum wage should be
between $18.65- $25.05 per hour in order to get by. why
hasn’t it reached closer to those rates? I know there are
many actors to consider but hard workers shouldn’t be
just scraping by.

Proposing A Solution

My proposal to raise the minimum wage is for the

government to pass a new law, that requires employers to
pay workers according to inflation rates. Every year, an
evaluation should be done to determine how much an
average person needs to live a comfortable life and yet be
able to save. They can research, consult with stakeholders
and assign the economic factor to detriment a new suitable
increase. Once they decide on the new minimum wage they
can announce and implement it through legislation.
