TIPS & TRICKS
SEAM ALLOWANCE
The pattern assumes you're using a 1/4" seam allowance. To measure your seam
allowance, gather 3 pieces of 2.5" x 2.5" fabric and sew into a row, then measure the width
of the center block. The center block should measure exactly 2.0" wide. If it's larger than
2.0" - your sewing too close to the edge of your fabric. If the center block is smaller than
2.0", your sewing too far away from the edge of your fabric.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
Yardage requirements are generous enough to allow for starching before cutting.

FABRIC SWATCHES
If you choose to use fabrics that represent colors other than what's pictured in the pattern,
you may find it helpful to cut a small piece of scrap from each of your different fabrics
and staple them to the appropriate section of the cutting instructions.

MANAGING SEAM BULK

Half-Square Triangles (or HST) can cause a lot of bulk if your not careful...and this pattern
is full of them! To help make blocks as flat as possible, most seams will press open. To
keep seams strong, consider reducing your stitch length to 1.8 or 2.0mm.

HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLES - TWO AT A TIME

There are a lot of ways to make HSTs, this pattern will use the two-at-a-time method. To
get the best results possible, when sewing along the diagonal line on to create your HST
pairs, sew with a very scant 1/4". If you're new to sewing, try doing a test run on scrap
fabric before you begin. If you find your HST is smaller than 4.5" x 4.5", you can do one of
the following:
Find the smallest HST you have and square ALL of your units to this measurement.
Your project will be smaller than the pattern, but still perfectly functional!
Reduce your seam allowance until you can create a HST that squares to 4.5" x 4.5"
Size up your cutting - cut pieces bigger than the 5" x 5" squares. (this will require more
yardage, produce more waste, and you'll need to recalculate cutting instructions.)
