CHAPTER: 5
5.1 Introduction
To calculate the survey size for a research topic, you need to consider the following factors:
Population size: The number of people who meet the criteria for your research.
Confidence level: The probability that the true population parameter will fall within the
confidence interval. Common confidence levels are 90%, 95%, and 99%.
The margin of error: The maximum amount by which the sample estimate may differ from the
true population value.
To calculate the survey size, you can use a sample size calculator or formula. Here's a simple
formula for a finite population:
n = (N * p) / (N - 1 + (p * (N - n)))
Where:
Rounding up to the nearest whole number, we get a sample size of 250 respondents.
Therefore, a sample size of 250 respondents would provide a representative sample of the target
population of 10,000 professionals involved in software development and integration projects,
with a margin of error that depends on the proportion of the population with a particular
characteristic (p).
Assuming a conservative estimate of p = 0.5, we can calculate the margin of error as follows:
E = Z * sqrt((p * (1 - p)) / n)
Where:
p is the estimated proportion of the population with a particular characteristic (0.5 when unsure)
Therefore, with a sample size of 250 respondents, we can achieve a margin of error of
approximately 5.1% at a 95% confidence level.
