The Appeal of Soap Operas
Many reasons have been put forward as to why soap operas enjoy such immense and
unbroken popularity over the decades. For the uninitiated, soap operas are TV series
about the lives and problems of a group of characters. Yet a soap opera is seen as a
guilty pleasure by the millions of fans around the world who watch them religiously
every day. Perhaps the appealing aspect of soaps is that viewers, and especially
women, tend to identify with the characters appearing in them. Such shows usually
place a lot of emphasis on the family. As people watch television families interact,
they are invited to share the problems these families face in order that they may look
for solutions to issues they are dealing with in their own lives. On a lighter side, fans
of the genre claim that soaps are simply fun to watch. Each episode keeps the
audience guessing about what will happen next. Also, many female viewers said they
can't wait to see how their favorite stars have their hair styled or what glamorous
outfits they will be wearing as the series unfolds.

the Prado copy and that he had a particularly close relationship with da Vinci.
3. B) reveals how da Vinci's would have looked when first painted.
Reason: The text mentions that the Prado's Mona Lisa provides clearer details of
features we can't see in the original and suggests that it may reveal how the Mona Lisa
would have looked at the time when first painted.
4. C) a fascinating woman.
Reason: The text describes Lisa Gherardini (the woman thought to be the subject of
the painting) as a "wealthy silk merchant's wife" and discusses the intrigue
surrounding her portrait, indicating that she was a fascinating figure.
5. A) is now more appealing than the original.
Reason: The text discusses how the Prado's copy offers a fresher and more vivid
impression of the Mona Lisa's features, suggesting that the writer finds it more
appealing than the original, which is obscured by layers of dirt and darkened varnish.
