__: Good afternoon teacher Katia Ramos and classmates. My name is____, my
partners are ______ and _____

We are going to present our ALP project. It’s about about a conversation
sharing the information of a torture and murder case and an exchange of
opinions about what we thought.

In short, we will pretend to be a group of friends who are going to start talking
about this case.

We Are Going to use the vocabulary of crime, behavior

S2:

Laura: oh, before I forget, I'm not going to be able to go out tomorrow night with
you either

Daniela: But why not?

Laura: Well, my parents won't let me, they say it's dangerous, and that we
should go for a walk earlier.

Mariana: Yeah, my parents think the same, I can't judge them with everything
that happens nowadays

Daniela: If we had more security on the streets at night, they would let us go
out more often.

Mariana: yes I know, or if only there were more people, now it is better to go
out to some places with people you know than to meet someone new

Laura: I wouldn't be too sure if I were you, a lot of bad things happen nowadays
with people you may have known for years.

Daniela: Yes, that’s right, I can't believe how insecure everything is.

Mariana: Yes, oh, that reminds me, Have you seen this case of the girl who
was kidnapped by 4 of her supposed schoolmates? I heard about it while
watching murder documentaries last week.

Daniela: Yes I read about that, but it’s not recent, in fact It happen a lot of years
ago.

Mariana: Are you talking about the girl who was found in a concrete barrel?

Daniela: Yes, when I saw it I was very scared, I couldn't believe it.

Laura: hear very little about it, can you tell me?

Daniela: I don't know if it's a good idea.

Mariana: I don’t have problems, But it is quite terrifying.

S3:

Daniela: If I’m not wrong the girl's name was Junko Furuta, She was born on
January 18, 1971 in Saitama Japan, she was described as a good daughter and
an exemplary student with good grades, good behavior and good relationships
with people who knew her, she had a fairly calm personality for a teenager.

Mariana: The four guilty in this case were named Hiroshi Miyano, Jō Ogura,
Shinji Minato, and Yasushi Watanabe. People who know about this case wish
they had spent the rest of their lives in prison.

Laura: Yes I heard that, She was in her third year at school at only 16 years
old, It happens in November, right?

Mariana: Yes, on November 25 she was returned to her home. Well in this part
there are different versions of the story, but the two best known are these. One
suggests that her schoolmates found her on the way and asked her out, which
she agreed to, thinking it should have been a harmless outing.

Daniela: The second version is that they saw Furuta cycling home after
finishing his part-time job and one of them, pretending to be a pickpocket,
kicked Furuta off his bike and immediately fled the scene. Miyano, under the
pretense that it was a coincidence that he had seen this attack, offered Furuta
to take her home.

Mariana: But that didn't happen because she was kidnapped.

Laura: Yes, I think I heard this part. If I’m not wrong she spent 40 days
kidnapped and tortured.

Mariana: What concerns me the most is the fact that the police or the people
could save her on several occasions.

Laura: yes you're right, but I want to know what happened with her parents?
Did they do anything?

Daniela: Yes, On November 27, Furuta's parents contacted the police about
their daughter's disappearance. But to Junko's misfortune, the kidnappers
forced her to call her mother. She was forced to say that she had run away, but
he was safe and stayed with a "friend"

Laura: How much control did those guys have?

Daniela: At that time it was known that they were members of the yakuza,
Japanese mafia, people must have been very afraid of them.

Laura: If only Junko's parents had known about the danger she was in, they
might have taken different steps to ensure her safety.
Mariana: A second time in which they could do something was when Minato's
parents were present, but unfortunately Furuta was forced to pose as the
girlfriend of one of his kidnappers so that no one would suspect anything.

Daniela: yeah that’s correct, and after that the Minatos stated that they didn’t
intervene out of fear because they knew of Miyano's yakuza connections, also
the kidnapper's older brother who knew of everything that what’s going on.

She could have been saved from further suffering. if only someone had
intervened.

Laura: If only society hadn't turned a blind eye to the signs of criminal activity,
Junko's fate could have been different.

Mariana: this story could have been different on many occasions, there's
another opportunity Ihara is one of the people who was intimidated to force him
to damage Furuta. After leaving Minato's house, he told his brother about the
incident. His brother later told his parents, who contacted the police.

Laura: I think I know that part. Two policemen were sent to Minato's house;
however, they were informed that there was no girl inside. The police officers
decline an invitation to look around the house, believing that the invitation alone
was evidence that there was nothing wrong to be found.

If the police officers had searched the house when they were first called, they
would have discovered the horrific truth about Junko.

Mariana: It's infuriating that they should have done something but they didn't. If
they had searched the house properly, her torture could have ended sooner.
Those officers should have followed protocol.

Daniela: If they had searched the house and located Furuta, his torture would
only have lasted sixteen days and she may have recovered herself after all.
Fortunately the two officers were fired for not following procedure.

Mariana: One of the last times something could be done was in December,
Furuta tried to call the police. However, she was discovered by Miyano before
she could say anything. When the police called back, Miyano informed them
that the emergency call was a mistake. As punishment for contacting the
authorities, Furuta's kidnappers tortured her.

If Junko had managed to contact the authorities without being discovered, her
torture could have ended sooner.

S4

Laura: Finally, on January 4, 1989, due to injuries and torture, Junko died.

Mariana: They left her body in a barrel on a lot in the city of Tokyo. The body
was discovered on January 23, 1989. The authors were arrested. However, due
to Japanese teenegers laws at the time, the sentences they received didn’t
reflect the seriousness of the crime.
If only the legal system had delivered a more just punishment to her murderers.

Daniela: Justice should have been served for Junko Furuta.

Mariana: The actions of Junko's kidnappers were not only illegal but also
deeply immoral and unacceptable. It’s inappropriate to downplay the severity of
the crime committed against Junko.

Laura: Unfortunately, cases of violence and cruelty like Junko's are not
uncommon incidents. This is not the first time such a horrible crime has
happened. And it shouldn't have been like that, they should have done more in
punishing those boys.

Mariana: if it had happened in the current times, they could have done more.

Daniela: The main defendant, Hiroshi Miyano, was initially sentenced to death,
but his punishment was later reduced to life in prison.

Laura: and the others only had a prison sentence of a few years, currently
some are free.

Mariana: Later it was learned that Junko's killers were involved in kidnapping,
torture and murder, even before what happened to her. all of which are criminal
acts deserving of several punishments.

Daniela: She could have been enjoying her teenage years, but instead, she
was subjected to unimaginable horrors. She was only 16 and should have been
safe.

Mariana: She could have been saved from suffering. If only someone had
intervened.

Laura: And it is unacceptable that after all the evidence the jury has not given
them the punishment they deserve.

It's just heartbreaking to think about the pain and suffering Junko Furuta
endured at such a young age. The fact that those guilty of her horrible fate had
a history of criminal behavior before this incident makes it even more alarming.

Daniela: This case should have served as a wake-up call for society to address
the root causes of such violence and ensure that those responsible face
appropriate consequences.
What worries me the most is the fact that knowing everything that the evidence
showed, the jury didn’t give them the correct sentence.

Mariana: You're right,This case should have caused a serious examination of

how these crimes are prevented and punished.

Laura: I agree with both of you. It's a tragic reflection of the shortcomings in the
legal and societal systems. The fact that Junko's killers were involved in criminal
activities even before this incident speaks about their dangerous behavior.
Daniela: Thank you both for this important conversation. It's a reminder that we
must never forget the victims and that our actions matter in shaping the world
we live in.
