GX6.0 Common Release Information

Overview
GX6.0 is a major system release for the Nimbra 600 and 1000 platforms. It contains upgraded
functionality as well as system improvements.
Notable is that GX6.0 is the first GX release to support the Nimbra 1060 high capacity platform.
As such it integrates several FX releases that have provided parts of the complete functionality.

New Functionality and System Enhancements

With GX6.0 Net Insight introduces the MSR 1000 family of products to the GX track of releases.
Nimbra 1060, a high capacity switch with 100 GbE interfaces running the MSR protocols is the
first product in the MSR 1000 series. The Nimbra 1060 currently comprises

• A Base Unit with 6 slots with 100 Gbps capacity each, and slots for 2 redundant Node
Controller/Switch boards with fans and 2 PSUs (AC or DC options)
• Three new Media Acceleration Modules (MAM)
o IF1020 - 20 x 10 GbE SFP+
o IF1030 - 2 x 100 GbE QSFP28
o IF1032 - 2 x 100 GbE QSFP28/CFP2 Combo
• Each MAM may support Media and/or Network functions
o IF1020 MAM – MSR Trunk or Ethernet Access functions
o IF1030 MAM – MSR Trunk function
o IF1032 MAM – MSR Trunk or Ethernet Access functions
The Nimbra 1060 is designed for media processing and transport in all-IP scenarios making it
ideal for high quality, high capacity media services networks.
Nimbra 1060 has the same plug and play service provisioning and handling capabilities as the
other MSRs and is fully backwards compatible to the Nimbra 600 series using the 10 GbE IP
trunk interface in SFS (Sub Frame Switching) mode.
Nimbra 1060 Features Included in GX 6.0.0.0
MSR Trunk function:

• 20 x 10 Gbps SFP+ IP trunk on IF1020

• 2 x 100 Gbps QSFP28 IP trunk on IF1030
• 2 x 100 Gbps QSFP28/CFP2 Combo IP trunk on IF1032
• 32 trunks per board
• SFS mapping – services mapped to channels that are multiples of 8 slots (i.e. channels
with 4 Mbps bandwidth granularity, instead of 0.5 Mbps as in the Nimbra 600)
o Requires SFS mode on IF625 10 GbE IP trunk for interwork with Nimbra 600
• Row and Column FEC for SFS trunks
o Decoupled configuration of row-fec and column-fec
o Each row-fec packet can protect between 3 and 32 packets against single
errors
o The matrix defining the column-fec scheme can have from 3 to 31 rows and
from 4 to 64 columns, allowing correction of burst error of up to 64 packets.
• FEC is supported on SFS trunks on all available interface speeds in Nimbra 600 (1G and
10G) and Nimbra 1060 (10G and 100G)
• 1G mode on SFS trunk interfaces in Nimbra 600
Note: Only optical SFPs are supported in this release, not electrical
Ethernet Access function:

• 20 x 10 GbE Ethernet Access on IF1020

• 2 x 100 GbE Ethernet on IF1032
• 32 Forwarding Functions
• 64 Channels
• 16 ETS groups

Release Notes GX6.0 7 / 16

• Fault propagation
• 1+1 Hitless/Standby ETS protection
• Forwarding based on VLAN tag
• Tagging and un-tagging of VLAN
• MAC switching
• Priority queueing
• 400 Mpackets/s throughput
• Ethernet frame size up to 1539 bytes
• Static MAC addresses for steering multicast flows as well as multicast flooding
prevention
• 1G mode on optical Ethernet access interfaces in Nimbra 1060
Note: Only optical SFPs are supported in this release, not electrical
• Support for dumping/displaying MAC address learned by forwarding functions on the
Ethernet access. This function is implemented as a command on the node controller.
Executing the command without parameters displays all options: > rcmd eth-mac
Compatibility

• The Ethernet/ETS functionality is perfectly compatible between Nimbra 600 and Nimbra
1060.
• It is recommended to configure ETS channels in Nimbra 600 that has a channel size
which is a multiple of 8 DTM slots, since Nimbra 1060 ETS channels have this
granularity. Other channel sizes can be used but will waste bandwidth within the Nimbra
1060 part of the network.
• In order to use FEC on a trunk between a Nimbra 1060 and a Nimbra 600, also the
Nimbra 600 need the GX6.0 SW, GX5.6 has SFS trunk support but not yet with FEC
support.
Ethernet Access limitations (vs Ethernet Access in Nimbra 600)

• Nimbra 1060 only support the DCP-3 control protocol when configuring a new ETS
channel. However, a Nimbra 1060 can receive both DCP-2 and DCP-3 controlled ETS
channels. DCP-2 is depreciated in Nimbra 1060 and it is suggested to use DCP-3 in
Nimbra 600 as well.
• MEF Bandwidth Profile (policing) support not implemented
• MEF SOAM (Service OaM) support not implemented
• Support for Jumbo frames larger than 1539 bytes not implemented
• The Hitless 1+1 ETS protection function has limitations in the differential delay between
the two legs of the connection. This makes hitless 1+1 protection usable mostly on
local events, such as stadium events etc. with small and controlled differential delays.
For larger differential delays the 1+1 protection will automatically enter Standby 1+1
protection state which is not hitless but render a sub-50 ms data loss while doing the
fail-over switch.
• Hitless packet-rate limitations: For all normal use-cases the full back-plane capacity
(100 Gb/s) can be used for Hitless traffic, but if all packets have minimum frame size,
only 69% of the backplane capacity can be utilized for Hitless traffic. The remaining
capacity can then however be used for non-hitless traffic. (This issue should have
almost zero impact in normal use but is mentioned for completeness).

GX Notation
GXx.y[.z[.t]] [LTS]
x = Generation
y = Major release
z = Minor release (seldom used)
t = Patch level (bug fixing only, no or little new functionality)
The major features of a release are defined by the first two numbers. The 3rd number indicates
stepping of some minor functionality. Minor releases are seldom used. The 4th number denotes
a patch release. If customers have certified a given GX release for use in his network, they can
consider it safe to upgrade to a patched version of that release without their own regression
testing.
LTS denotes "Long Time Support" and have a longer support span than non-LTS (regular) GX
releases.

Supported releases
The following releases are currently (2020-04-02) supported:

• GX6.0
• GX5.6 LTS
• GX5.3 LTS (Nimbra 300 only)
Long Time Support (LTS) releases are recommended for use in most cases, when the latest
functionality is not required. LTS releases have the largest user base and hence gets the best
support. The support statement for GX releases is formulated in these two rules:

Release Notes GX6.0 9 / 16

EXTERNAL INFORMATION
NID5487, A2

Regular GX: Supported until the next regular GX or LTS GX is released plus 6 months.
LTS GX: Supported until the next LTS GX is released plus 1 year, but minimum 3 years.
