THE SANGHA

In early Buddhism, Saṅgha referred to the noble fourfold assembly of

disciples, either monastic or lay, who are fully or partially awakened. Saṅgha
these days refers to the assembly of ordained monks and nuns. Monastic seniority
is decided by the number of rain retreats, not by biological age.

As Buddhism now spreads around the world, monastic routines and

cultivation vary from region to region. Regardless of their Buddhist sects, monks
and nuns keep a simple life, and devote themselves to the study, reflection,
practice and propagation of the Buddha’s teachings. They cultivate the four
immeasurable minds_loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and
equanimity. Many practise transcendent perfections such as generosity,
discipline, endurance, diligence (vigour), concentration (contemplation), and
wisdom.

Their day usually starts before dawn and contains several sessions of
reciting suttas, studying Dhamma, practising meditation and doing monastery
chores during the day. Monks and nuns serve humanity both by their morality
and their social activities.

THE SANGHA
Buddhism dates back over 2,500 years ago. It has spread to most parts of
Asia and, in the 20th century, to the West. For many people, Buddhism is one of
the largest religions in the world. For others, Buddhism is a philosophy, or
simply a way of living, or a way of spiritual training. Research in 2020 shows
that about 7%* of the world population identify as Buddhists.
To become a lay Buddhist, one should do three things. First, take refuge in
the Triple Gem _ the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha. Second, observe
five precepts, that is, refraining from killing, from stealing, from doing sexual
misconduct, from making false speech and from using intoxicants. Third, do
charity and practice mindfulness.
Most lay followers arrange a Buddhist altar at home and keep a regular or
lifetime vegetarian diet. They often visit a pagoda or monastery to chant Buddhist
scriptures and listen to Dhamma preaches.
