IELTS Writing Task 2: DOS and DON’TS

What Do You Know? Answer True or False.

1. Candidates need to memorize hundreds of vocabulary words to do well on task 2.

2. Writing a short conclusion (2 or 3 sentences) at the end of a task 2 is a waste of time.

3. Candidates will receive very low scores if they don’t write enough (250 words).

4. There are several differences in task 2 question types, so there are corresponding
ways to plan an essay.

5. Candidates should avoid repetition in all circumstances to maximize scores for

coherence and cohesion and vocabulary.

6. Decisive opinion(s) (being clear on your opinion) are not needed on task 2 since
examiners expect to read about different points of view on the topics.

7. Candidates can only get a 9 if all of their sentences are error-free.

8. If candidates write too much (are over length) their scores will decline.

9. To obtain high scores in task 2, candidates need deep, almost ‘expert’ understanding
of certain topics.

10. It is not difficult to score a 7, but only those who study hard and have feedback from
teachers regularly will be able to do it.
