Lesson 2
Sample Answer to PART 1
Gifts
1. What’s the best present or gift you have ever received?
I received lots of gifts from my relatives and friends, among which I show a great preference for a bicycle.
It was a birthday present from my parents when I was twelve. It was rare to have a mountain bike at that
time. I used to ride it to school and it made my life much more convenient.

7
2. Do you give expensive gifts?
Well, sending pricey presents is unnecessary for me. First of all, expensive gifts may cost me a lot. And
second of all, I don’t think my friends, who are the most frequent receivers of my presents, would be
actually happy if they know the price. They also don’t need expensive stuff either. So, I would say for me,
sending expensive gifts is unnecessary.

3. What kinds of gifts are popular in your country?

I think gifts are becoming more diverse these days. Stuffed animals, accessories, jewelries and flowers
are too traditional for the young. Probably handmade stuff is currently on top of the list because of their
spiritual value. And sometimes it doesn’t have to be a physical gift. Probably a delicious homemade meal
is enough to make their day.

Lesson 2
Sample Answer to PART 2
Everyone set goals in life and work hard to achieve them. I also set many goals for myself. One of my long
term goals is to become a successful business entrepreneur.

I know it would not be easy in today's era of competition. But, nothing is impossible and I am sure that
with diligence and perseverance, I can make it happen. I want to achieve it because I want to raise the
standard of living for my family and give them a better future. I have seen my father work very hard to
8
provide us good education and fulfill all our other requirements. I want to give my parents a stress-free
and happy retirement life. I have completed my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. After
graduation, I would like to work in a big company for 2-3 years to get some experience in running a
company. Then I shall do MBA and after that I plan to start my own business. I really wish to succeed in
this venture.

It has always been my dream to be an entrepreneur. My father is a successful businessman. I think I

inherited his business acumen. I believe that by receiving higher education and accumulating rich
experience in a large company, I can successfully run my own company in the future.

Lesson 2
Sample Answer to PART 3
1. What’s the difference between goals set by old people and young people?
The difference is that the goals of young people are usually related to consumption, while the goals of
older people are usually more anti-consumerist. The goals of young people are often materially-based,
such as buying a car, a luxury product, or getting a promotion and salary increase. On the other hand, the
goal of the elderly is anti-consumerist. For example, my grandma's goal is to have her own small yard, so
that she can grow vegetables instead of buying them.
9

2. Why is setting goals important in the workplace?

Clear and measurable goals encourage employees to be more productive, creative and proactive. When
employees can see an end goal or a milestone in their career, they’re more likely to be motivated and keen
to strive for success.

3. Do people usually set long-term goals or short-term ones?

I think we set ourselves more short-term goals. Today, many people's short-term goals are to change their
bad habits within a month, to lose weight in 6 months, or to learn a language within a year. These short-
term goals are more realistic and more likely to be achieved. In contrast, without specific consideration of
capabilities, it’s easy to overestimate our long-term goals and become impractical.
