Module 23: The Classroom Climate and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

What is a Classroom Climate? Why do we need to know what is this on our future
teaching?
The classroom climate is more a product of the interactions between and among
teacher and students. The physical condition of the classroom may exert an influence
on the social interaction among personalities in class. Classroom Climate is one that is
business like yet non-threatening. It is a classroom where expectations ,rules and
procedures, limits on behavior are made clear of the teacher in the very first day of
school. The teacher who is the leader, is fully aware of what is happening and who is in
control of the classroom proceeding and yet convey the message that s/he is interested
in the concerns of students as individuals and the class as a whole. The students also
are responsible for their own behavior.
Let’s proceed in the Social-Emotional Learning and how it is connected to the
classroom climate. The classroom climate definitely becomes highly favorable with
Social-Emotional Learning. SEL integrates academic, social and emotional learning.
The Collaborative for Social Emotional learning (CASEL), the leading organizations
advancing the promotion of integrated academic, social and emotional learning for all
children in preschool through high school. There are five(5) competencies that is
expanded by CASEL.1. Self- awareness means the ability to understand your emotion
and thought and how they influence your behaviors. Skills that can be include in self-
awareness such as identifying emotions, self- perception, recognizing strengths, self-
confidence, and self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the belief of your own ability to succeed in
specific situations or accomplishing a task. 2. Self-management means the ability to
regulate your emotions and behaviors in different situations and to set work towards
goals. Here are the skills that include in self-management these are executive function
and self-regulate that are the mental processes that enable you to plan, focus attention,
remember instructions and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Next, is stress-
management and self-discipline. 3. Responsible decision making is the ability to make
positive choices and take responsibility for positive and negative outcomes. Skills in
Responsible decision making include identifying problems, analyzing situations, solving
problems and reflection. 4. Social-Awareness means is the ability to take the
perspective of and empathize with others. Skills in social awareness include empathy,
appreciating differences and respect. 5. Relationship Skills- the ability to establish and
maintain healthy and meaningful relationship with others. Skills that include in
relationships skills these are communicating clearly, listening, cooperation, resisting
negative pressure, resolving conflicts and supporting one another.
It is really important that we have the knowledge about this Classroom Climate and
Social-Emotional Learning because we can use it in the our future teaching. Social-
Emotional Learning helps the teachers and students to better comprehend their
different emotions and feel empathy that they could used to help others to be positive
and able to make decisions to achieve their goals with a better relationship with other.
Because of the students excitement for discovery, happiness, contentment, and pride in
one’s achievements define the learning process. Students are motivated to learn more
as a result of all these pleasant feelings, that is the role of the classroom climate.
