Simple Dual Site Repeater

Introduction

• This repeater setup was configured to satisfy customers’ re- quests of


being able to have two repeaters located far apart to be ‘linked’ together.
• This will enable radio communication in one site to be repeated at the
local site, as well as relayed to a remote site and vice versa.

Site Setup

A site setup consists of the following items :

• Basic repeater controller (HLN3948)


• 2 units of GM300 housed in a GR300 Housing (for local repeating)
• 1 unit of extra GM300 (for RF link to remote site)
• duplexer for the local repeater
• antenna for local repeater
• directional antenna for the link radio.

This setup is duplicated at both sites.

Cable Connections

Three cables are used to connect the radios to the Basic Repeater Controller (refer
to Site Setup Diagram).
• Cable X : between the Accessories port of the Repeater controller to the
Accessories port of the Link Radio
• Cable Y : between the TX port of the Repeater controller to the Accessories port
of the Repeater TX Radio
• Cable Z : between the RX port of the Repeater controller to the Accessories port
of the Repeater RX Radio

Cable Y & Z are supplied with the GR300 accessories pack. Instructions for
constructing Cable X is as follows : (see next page)

Radio Setup and Programming

• Links radios are programmed just as normal radios with Tx frequency to


same as the Rx frequency.
• Repeater radios (pair) are programmed as “Repeater” (selected within the
GM300 RSS).
• Repeater type is set as : Radius Rick (in the RSS).
• PL/DPL could be used in all radios/repeaters for the usual purpose as
well as to reduce dekey “burst”.
• Dekey “burst” could also be left intact as a feature to distinguish between
local radio or remote radio transmission.

Repeater Controller Setting
• The Repeater Controller must be openned up and the DIP switch S2, set
this way :
– S2-3 : ON (S2-2 OFF, the RX radio keys the TX radio with
pin 8 “COR signal)
– S2-6 : ON (Use Mic Audio)
– S2-10 : ON (no drop out delay)
– S2-11 : ON (no drop out delay)
– all other switches at OFF position.
• Pot R23 is used to adjust the audio level through the repeater controller.
• To increase audio level under this application, R25 (1.5k) will have to be
removed and replaced with a short.

NOTES FOR NEW RADIOS

Although this application note describes the configuration with the GM300, the new
Commercial Series and Professional Series can be used. The accessory connector
configuration will be the same.
