VOLLEYBALL

A. History

 William Morgan – inventor of volleyball, 1895 in Holyoke Massachusetts


 Elwood Brown – brought volleyball to the Philippines
 Mintonette – first name of volleyball

B. Volleyball court – 18 meters x 9 meters.

C. Players
 6 players in each team, clockwise rotation
Players Position
 Setter- sets/toss the ball to prepare for an attack
 Spikers – frontline players that attack
 Stopper and Backline players
D. Skills
1. Serving - begins the game.
2. Passing -skill that’s performed by the player receiving the serve.
3. Setting is the action of playing the ball to a teammate.
4. Attacking or spiking is the action of sending the ball over the net to the opponent's court.
5. Blocking- action of trying to prevent the ball from crossing the net into your court.
6. Digging is the action of playing the ball in a way that prevents the ball from touching the court

E. Violations
1. Stepping on or over the line on a serve.
2. Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully.
3. Hitting the ball illegally ( Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc. ).
4. Touches of the top of the net only with any part of the body while the ball is in play.
5. Reaches under the net ( if it interferes with the ball or opposing player ).
6. Failure to serve in the correct order.
7. Blocks or spikes from a position which is clearly not behind the 10-foot line while in a back row
position.
8. A players foot may not completely cross the midline at any time. However, if the rest of the body
crosses it is legal unless interferes with a player on the other side of the net.

F. Officials
1.Referee - manager of the game, gives final decision, signals service and violations over the net
2. Umpire/2nd Referee - initiates toss coin to begin the game, mirror of the referee, monitors rotation
and substitution, calls violation under the net
3. Scorer/Scorekeeper – records the score and player’s score and substitution
4. Line Judges/Linemen – signals in or out of bounds
