study.
1. A single-phase transmission line is used to supply a load of 15 MVA at 0.8 power factor
lagging at 77 kV. The line constants are as follows; resistance 25 Ω, inductance 200
𝑚𝐻, capacitance between lines 2.5𝜇𝐹, the frequency is 50 Hz.
a. The voltage, current and power factor at the sending-end, Using a nominal-T method
of solution.
b. The percentage regulation( Ignore Ferranti effect).
2. A 3-phase, 50 Hz overhead transmission line has the following constants per phase:
resistance 30 Ω, inductive reactance 40Ω, capacitive reactance 600 Ω. The line supplies
a balanced, star-connected load of 90 MW with a power factor of 0.8 lagging at a line
voltage of 130 kV.
a. Calculate, using nominal T method the values of the current, voltage and
power factor at the sending-end.
b. Calculate the regulation of the line, ignoring the Ferranti effect.
3. Calculate the inductance and capacitance per phase of a 15km long three-phase
transmission line with solid conductors spaced symmetrically with 750 mm between
centres. The diameter of each conductor is 12mm.
4. A short single-phase transmission line has a loop resistance of 0.4Ω. When it transmits
500kVA at a power factor of 0.8 lagging, the regulation is 8%. If receiving end voltage
is 2kV, Obtain the reactance of the line.
5. Using the 𝜋 method, calculate the sending-end voltage and the current for a long
transmission line supplying a load of 60 MVA three-phase at 0.8 p.f lagging at 132 kV,
50 Hz. Each conductor has a resistance of 25 Ω, an inductance of 0.2 H and a
capacitance to neutral of 1.5 𝜇𝐹.

6. A three-phase 50Hz line,5 km long, supplies 5000 W at a p.f of 0.71 lagging. The line
has a resistance of 0.0345 Ω per km for each wire and an inductance per phase per km
of 1.5 mH. The receiving-end line voltage is 33kV. A capacitor banc (delta) is connected
across the load to raise its p.f to 0.91 lagging.
Calculate:
a. The capacitance of each capacitor.
b. The sending-end voltage with the capacitor in use and out of use and the efficiency
of the transmission in each case.
