Living together in a highly interconnected world

Statement of inquiry
Effective collaboration can be enhanced through design in a highly
interconnected world

Global context
Globalization and sustainability

1
Criteria A: Inquiring and Analysing

Strand i: Explain and justify the need

The nature of issue

We humans have been working in groups and teams since centuries as we progressed. From hunting
together for survival to fighting together in wars to protect one’s nation to working together to discover and
solve those once believed unfathomable universal phenomena such as the great team of NASA working
together to achieve the Apollo 11 mission. There is nothing we humans haven’t been able to achieve when we
worked in groups. Compared to before, our demands, beliefs, systems, and many things have changed, largely
due to globalisation. However, in our modern society, chances of socialising and collaborating start to decrease
as we age.
A study done by Aalto University and the University of Oxford1 shows that social circles shrink
significantly after the age of 25. People tend to start isolating and distancing themselves due to many reasons
such as their careers, new responsibilities, and new changes; especially if they are a parent. People are so busy
with their hectic schedules that they can't grasp a little bit of time to meet and greet people who might have
similar interests and a situation as them or feel shy to do so.
This could result negatively on parents, their children and the whole school community as parents are
a key part of building and providing the substantial needs and advice for any school to advance and upgrade
its services to the top-most level. Parents are the guardians who look after their children after school ends and
have a huge impact on their future. If teachers and parents could collaborate more effectively with open
communication, they could exercise and find solutions for moving to the next step and teaching the students
as many vital skills and attributes as possible at an early age.

The cause
There are many reasons why adults, usually those taking care of their family, might find it hard to
socialise, one of the reasons being the lack of time and opportunities to work with others. Since people
become independent, they don’t have anyone to sometimes push them out of their comfort zone. So they stick
to their normal routine. They also have many responsibilities, so taking out time to socialise seems a bit
agitating and maybe their schedule doesn't fit with their friends. People might also fear judgement. They
might become socially anxious because they might feel they are not in their golden age anymore.

The effects
1. Poor collaboration leads to poor communication meaning people aren't able to express their feelings or
ideas which makes the environment less conducive to productivity and creativity. If parents show poor
collaboration skills, they will find it difficult to teach the future generation how to work in teams, innovate
and show their creativity.
2. There will be a lack of innovations as people won’t be able to work in groups and exchange their knowledge
which could have led to better outcomes or solutions.
3. People start to isolate themselves and aren’t able to share the knowledge they have or gather information
from others which could be useful.
4. People will not manage time effectively as they will try to do everything by themselves and will not be able
to move on and clear up their schedules.
5. People might become a victim of mental health issues such as depression or dementia because of
loneliness.
The importance

1
Study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4852646/
2
1. Improves ways for problem-solution by engaging everyone to use their critical thinking skills. This is
important as it could be helpful in many situations.
2. Enables people to share their creativity and innovative ideas to build something better and help others.
This could also motivate others to try and cooperate with each other.
3. Allows the distribution of time effectively as everyone works on different tasks to meet the ultimate goal.
4. Improves skills and traits such as collaboration, leadership, communication, flexibility, adaptability, critical
thinking, creative thinking and accountability. These skills are important to develop to unleash one’s full
potential.
5. Allows us to build healthier relationships and motivate people to be productive which is better for society.
6. Leads to a healthier lifestyle and better choice-making.

The targeted audience

My targeted audience would be parents, who are very important stakeholders in any school
community. They are the guiding spirits who help their child to learn important skills and valuable lessons.
Collaboration between parents and school can be very helpful for a school community as they can work
together and come up with solutions to create a more educational conducive environment for their child.

Relation with the global context, key concept and related concept
Under the global context, ‘Globalisation and sustainability’, I will discover how close relationships of an
individual affect life individually and globally and how social sustainability can help us create a better world.
Globalisation refers to the change, interdependency, and exchange happening in our highly interconnected
world in every aspect: economic, cultural, social and political. Sustainability refers to practising methods
which will help preserve and conserve a world at peace and balance socially, environmentally and
economically for the future generation. Social sustainability refers to balanced human conditions in society
and means good mental and physical well-being and overall happiness and equality.
I will understand how small-scale interaction and collaboration can aid humanity on a large scale as
people will develop their communication and social skills. School is a learning program where school
stakeholders have a chance to connect and exchange information with each other globally such as with interns
from foreign nations. The school allows students to gain more insight into our world systems and helps them
to develop the skills necessary to be global citizens and participate in international affairs as they grow. Thus,
taking school as my platform will be efficient as it combines different age groups and provides a common
ground for discussion and activities.
I will be producing a product that will be aiding the school community. From my prior observation and
initial research, I believe that even though school is an essential part of a student’s life, it should involve all the
school stakeholders and be a learning journey for everyone at every age. By finding new ways to get parents
more involved in school activities, they will collaborate with each other which will personally help them to
develop skills and enlarge their social circle. It will help their children as their parents will be more engaged
with their learning and this will ultimately help the world as children and parents play a key role in any
growing nation and economy. This would contribute to social sustainability as parents will make new
colleagues who have a similar lifestyle as them and find a good company to interact with.

Research questions that were answered:
● What is collaboration?
● How can parents collaborate with the school?
● Why is parent-teacher collaboration important?
● In what ways have schools been collaborating with parents?

By conducting this interview with Ms Shruti,

I was able to understand why it is important
for parents to collaborate with the school. It
provided me with insight as to how important
the role of a parent is in a student’s learning
journey.

“Parents are the child’s first role model. Children

behave, react and imitate same as their parents.
Parents play important role in encouraging and
motivating their kids to learn. Good parental
support helps child to be positive, healthy and
good life long learner. Children acquire skills at
the very early stage of their life if the parents are
responsive and understanding. Therefore, parents
play a major role in a school community.”

The paragraph above briefly summarised why it is important to work with parents to help build a better
community and make kids a long-time active learners as learning is not just limited to going to school, kids
learn a lot from their parents and from the environment they grow up in. Thus, by guiding parents about
different techniques and ways they can inculcate learning into their child’s life; school can help the youth to
see things from a different perspective and become the change they want to see. She also updated me with
ways our school collaborates with parents and provided me with feedback about the coffee mornings our
school has held in the past.

Research questions that were answered:

● Why do people stop socialising as they get older?
● How can parents collaborate with the school?
● Why is parent-teacher collaboration important?
● In what ways have schools been collaborating with parents?

From the survey that I conducted with the parents using Google Forms2I was able to find out their needs and
grasp their perspective on collaboration with the school. With a total of 8 questions, I was able to prepare a
short simple survey with checkboxes and multiple choice options which took an average of about 1-2 minutes
but it helped me a lot to understand the social life of a parent and how they think that a parent should
collaborate with the school.

Collaboration is an act of two or more

individuals working together to create and
produce an outcome they desire.
Collaboration, especially in a workspace, is
very important for building better
relationships and has many benefits like more

collaborate, one needs to use collaboration skills which if undeveloped could be problematic and have
disadvantages such as lack of innovation, waste of time and lower team morale.

There are many ways and methods to collaborate such as with team, community and network3 with
conference meetings (in person or online), workspace apps, phone calls, and e-mail,
The figure4 above shows the collaboration challenges around the world. The hardest challenge seems to be
poor communication and different paces in working. To overcome these challenges one needs to be: efficient,
punctual, consistent, trustworthy, open-minded, responsible, confident, clear and positive.

Research question that was answered:

● Why is parent-teacher collaboration important?
● How can parents collaborate with the school?

According to many sources, there is a positive connection between parent-school communication. Schools,
parents and students benefit from the collaboration between parents and students. The following table
summarises the benefits for each group of people.

The Varkey foundation organisation5 shares what teachers and parents can do to improve communication
with each other. Teachers should talk to the parents and build a better relationship with them. They can
develop a support system for parents where they can help each other to meet the demands of the modern
learning system. They can also provide parents access to psychological counselling as it is important to be in
the right headspace first to be able to contribute. They should also update the parents with the technologies
and tools that are used for teaching their children. Parents should communicate effectively and be ‘Active
Caretakers’ by providing an environment conducive to learning. They should help their child build a
consistent routine and have a positive attitude about school. They should guide their child from the harm they
can face while being online and the difference between right and wrong. They should also be like friendly
teachers to their children because learning never stops.

Secondary data collection {2} - News article6

Research question that was answered:

● Why do people stop socialising as they get older?

In a news article by Divya Naik, she shares that for an adult (who is a parent) in their 30s, their life seems to
revolve more around their families, especially their children. Many seem to have lost touch with those friends
and buddies that they used to hang out with. According to the article, a study done by researchers at
University College London found that people who are more socially involved in their 50s and 60s have a lower
risk of developing dementia. But since people become more socially isolated during their 30s, it is not a good
picture to paint.
She interviewed Meenakshi Atawnia, the founder of The Cognitive Factor and trauma-informed counselling
psychologist based in Delhi, who shared the reasons behind the thinning of the social circle with ageing. An
increase in responsibilities deducts time and opportunities for adults to socialise and spend quality time
interacting and collaborating. Having lost many friendships along the journey, one starts to believe that
friendship is a waste of time. They start to feel exhausted to meet new people and start from the initial stages
and this is why they avoid socialising in general. She also says that adults might fear being judged.

attending school events, had higher academic achievement as compared to parents who are less involved with
their child’s schooling. This study depicts the importance of parents’ involvement in school, most importantly
during the elementary stage. It is very important for a child’s healthy growth to be able to learn and explore. If
a parent's involvement with schooling can aid a child to learn better then organising school events can aid
with this.

Conclusion

After researching and interviewing, I understood the importance of collaboration in our society. It is a tool
that helps us to think bigger and work faster to reach beyond our expectations. We, humans, have more
potential to create and innovate when we work together in unity.
With time, some people face the issue of maintaining and balancing their social life after becoming a parent
because of so many responsibilities they have for supporting their family and themselves. One can’t just
discard the duty they have in a relationship but one does need proper emotional well-being. So if by providing
an environment in the school where parents can collaborate with teachers and parents, they can help enlarge
their social circle with people who they share similar problems and lifestyles with and also help with their
child’s learning.

Strand Answer

Goal After researching and evaluating products, there was a lot of potential in parent workshops or
face-to-face events. So, the goal of my product will be to serve as a collaboration platform in
school between parents and teachers in a school community. Parents play a major role in
supporting a student’s journey throughout their school career and with parents collaborating
with each other and the teachers, they can optimise learning and provide the best tools and
guidance needed by a student to excel forward. It will also help the school community grow and
prosper and help to build a more sustainable environment.

Role My role as a student will be to come up with possible solutions where I can help the school
community grow and ultimately help me and other students to learn and utilise our time better

13
by coming up with a product where parents and teachers can brainstorm and innovate ideas and
better methods of learning.

Audience My targeted audience is parents. I want to create such a product where parents can collaborate
with each other and other school stakeholders such as the school staff, to come up with ways to
make school more conducive to learning important and vital information and skills. Also, parents'
collaboration is crucial for them, their family as well as society.

Situation I want to enhance the way parents have been collaborating with the school. In my secondary and
primary research, parents understand and want more opportunities to collaborate with schools. I
want to provide a product which will allow parents to collaborate with each other to learn and
help others learn. Also, I want parents to collaborate with teachers so that they can exchange
their knowledge and come up with the best possible solutions to help kids learn as they are the
upcoming geniuses of our future.

Product/ I want to host an event in my school that will enable parents to collaborate and communicate by
Performance learning, performing and actively participating in activities and games that will help them
and Purpose understand the mission and purpose of soulful learning and the importance of intuitive learning.
This will be helpful as it will give a chance for parents to interact and collaborate with each other,
get to know one another better, learn new things, understand wider concepts, come up with
better innovative solutions, and come closer as a school community. This would be helpful as
parents can contribute to their child’s learning and provide them with better facilities and extra
support as knowing what their child is learning will enable them to guide their child on the right
path. This will also be helpful for parents as they will develop their collaboration skills and work
together towards the prosperity of the world.

Standards & For my product to be successful, it must meet up with these criteria:
Criteria for 1. Every parent should be involved and should collaborate with their team members.
Success 2. There should be at least 3 games or activities that involve a lot of teamwork and
collaboration.
3. A well-designed invitation poster should be given to every parent informing them about the
event.

Major The biggest problem would be that not all parents will be able to attend this event since it would
constraint be a face-to-face program. I will have to make sure that I prepare the activities in a way that fits
the time limit.

Design 3: Sport event

S. no. Category Design 3 Explanation

1. Aesthetic 5 There is a vivid colour scheme with the use of monochromatic and
complementary colour palettes. The design is simple yet sophisticated
and looks very appealing.

2. Cost 5 This event would be free of cost for the parents and would cost me (&
school) less than ₹500.

3. Customer (Targeted 3 The parents in teams would be able to collaborate with each other but
audience) they won’t be able to interact with the academic personnel nor learn
about their child’s learning.

4. Environment 2 This event can be organised in some schools which have a large open
space. It can only be conducted outdoors.

5. Size 4 This event would be longer than 2 hours and would be hard to
accommodate more than 80 people.

6. Safety 4 The event could lead to injury if someone slips or gets hurt.

7. Function 4 Parents will be developing their communication and social skills but
they won’t be learning about their child’s learning.

8. Materials 2 It will require Adobe Photoshop. It doesn't have paper-based

Selected design: Design 1

Reason
From the above three ideas, I selected Design 1 which is a coffee morning event on the principles of IB which
received 38/40. The topic is IB because just like in my hometown, there would be many places around the
world where many parents might not be very well aware of the concept of IB and to help them understand
why this board is so helpful not just for the student but rather the whole society. This topic suits my issue for
enhancing collaboration as IB encourages students to be good communicators and use social skills to develop
thus I would be able to share information about IB in a way that IB teaches students and helps build active
learners. I choose this topic for coffee morning rather than Design 2, which received 36/40, because even
though parents are collaborating with each other, they won’t be able to gain knowledge about their child’s
learning and won’t be able to improve cooperation and understanding with them as much as they can with
Design 1. Also, the activities in Design 2 weren't up to the level I was hoping to achieve. I didn’t choose Design
3, which received 29/40, even though it had perfect aesthetics and was up to the budget because I wouldn’t
have been able to involve all parents as some might not prefer to play sports and it also didn’t have extra
benefits such as learning about their child’s board.

In conclusion, Design 1 fitted best with my design specifications and it is allowing parents to collaborate with
each other which will as result enhance collaboration and communication between them which would be
helpful and beneficial for them, their child, school, their society and the whole world.

Design for the quiz The colour scheme is blue and white to resemble the IB logo. It
has a solid blue background with a white pop-up box with
shadows around it. The header and the footer are separated by
a black line.

Buttons There would be six buttons in total: ‘IB learner profile’, ‘Exit’,
‘Continue’, ‘Next’, ‘Replay Quiz’ and ‘Quit Quiz’. Each would be

# Task Design Tools Material Time Explanation

1 Making the Logo ✘ ✔ ✔ ✔ After I finished making the logo, I felt that the logo
wasn’t showing an emotional connection with the
parent and child. So, I added hearts to display that. The
red heart over the black was a good contrast and looked
visually appealing too.

2 Making the Invitation ✘ ✔ ✔ ✘ When I was finished with the invitation card, I felt that
card the text was too boring, so I replaced the ‘O’ with a
coffee bean which made it more interesting and suited
well with the theme. Making the coffee cup took way
longer than I had anticipated because of which I was
behind the track by 2 hours and took 5 hours than 3
hours to complete this.

Results
I conducted a field test for my event, coffee morning, which was about the IB
board and the main goal was to create an environment where parents
collaborated and worked with each other. Since there were 16 parents, we
created 4 teams of 4 people. Each team was determined by picking chits with a
team group: A, B, C, D. For an icebreaker, I asked each parent to tell their name,
profession, hobby and their favourite colour. This worked very nicely as the
parents opened up and there were a few moments of laughing and exchange of
conversation. Then after the introduction, I tested their creative thinking skills
and asked them to work as a team and come up with an innovative name for
their teams which they did I noticed that not everyone was still that opened up
but some people and some teams were communicating effectively with each other. After this, I began with the
presentation. There were 3 activities in total. The first was the mind map where each team was given a mind map
sheet and was told to think, discuss and share it with their team members. I noticed that almost everyone was
discussing and sharing their thoughts. This might have been because the MYP Years programme has recently been
introduced in my school. That's why parents are quite excited to share what they know about this board. All the
mind maps were filled quickly and then I described what IB is, its mission statement and its core concepts. The next
activity was guessing the ATL skills which had a prize for the winning team. I
noticed that parents quickly raised their hands and team members were
whispering in each other’s ears the answer. I then asked them to identify The
last activity was the quiz and everyone in the room was excited as this one also
had a prize at the end. By the end of the presentation, everyone was happy and
the event was successful. Everyone collaborated and later got to speak with all
the academic personnel. This event was on budget and fitted the environment
perfectly. The size of the event was perfect as it accommodated around 20
people and the total time was around 2 hours and 30 minutes. It didn’t use any
dangerous tools and no extra material was required.

Results
From the questions I asked, all the participants of the survey agreed that they became communicators and
developed their social skills, meaning this event was successful in some terms. Everyone agreed that they
understand their child’s learning better now and that the presentation was aesthetic. 10% of participants found
that this event was somewhat helpful to understand the IB board while all the other 90% agreed that it was helpful.
80% of participants found that this event helped them to become closer to other parents, talk to others and work in
groups and understand the workings of IB. The other 20% found it somewhat. The overall comments were that the
presentation was nice but could be more detailed. Many even asked to host such events more frequently.

Strand iv: Explain the impact of the solution

Impact on the target audience

My event had a significant impact on my target audience as visible in the feedback response shown above in
Criteria Di. They got to enhance their collaboration skills, social skills and communication skills by interacting
and engaging in activities as teams. This will allow them to communicate better and enhance collaboration in
the school community as parents are an important member of the school community who has a direct
influence on their children. If their children see that their parents work together, they will also learn to
communicate effectively. Parents also enlarge their friend circle and those who don't have time for socialising
can socialise while engaging in their child’s learning via the help of this event which is really important for
their mental well-being. Parents also got to learn about the IB board which helped them gain more insight and
understand more about how their child is being taught. While conducting this event, I observed that parents
also like to participate in competitive events as during the quiz activity, the whole room was full of whispers
and loudly spoken answers which shows the traits of an active learner. I noticed that at first everyone was a bit
shy and reluctant to open up but by the end, except for a few parents, everyone actively participated and
communicated with their team members. This event also contributes to globalisation and sustainability in the
sense that via this event parents enhance their collaboration skills which they will imply in their work life and
personal life and bring others to become good communicators and work together towards a common goal and
also have good mental well-being contributing to social sustainability.

Many parents asked and suggested that such events should be organised more often in the school where
parents collaborate with each other. This shows that the event had a positive effect on parents who are even
willing to attend such sessions in the school. This event was a way for parents to develop their social and
communication skills while learning about their child’s learning, which they can use in their workspace and
personal life. My product can be used by any school or organisation who want to host an event explaining the
wonders of the IB board (templates and links in Appendix C) as I have briefly introduced and covered the
benchmark that makes IB so unique and helps in a child’s holistic development.

Overall, this event helped parents to communicate better, learn more about IB, develop necessary skills and
enhance collaboration in the school community.
