1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This End of Well Report summarizes the operation, describe the management of techniques
and technologies applied by Weatherford Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) Services,
includes the best practices used in MPD operations, and also displays the MPD performance
related to drilling and pressure control, performance of the equipment, personal, procedures
execution and lessons learnt.

The well BRS-19Bis ST1 is the first well drilled with MPD technique as well as first horizontal
well in Ber Saba field, Tougurt Region of Algeria. Weatherford’s MPD System was chosen for
drilling the 6’’ section for GBRS BRS-19Bis ST1 well, to safely and efficiently drill the section,
by monitoring the well for influxes and losses, as well as maintaining Constant Bottom Hole
Pressure (CBHP) as needed. BHP was maintained constant by holding surface back pressure
(SBP) at the Weatherford choke manifold as determined by the well behavior. The Rotating
Control Device (RCD) and MPD choke manifold improved safety for the drilling personnel
through containment and safe diversion of return fluid from the well. Section 6 of this document
contains performances of the MPD system.

Full Weatherford crew arrived on location on 19th November 2019 for rig up operations of MPD
equipment. Equipment was rigged up, commissioned and pressure tested on 20th November
2019 then became fully operational.

MPD operation on BRS-19Bis ST1 well was commenced with drilling out of cement and 7’’
liner shoe track with 1.12 sg M.W with initial equivalent circulating density (ECD) of 1.23 sg.
Prior to start, finger printing of MPD equipment was performed as well as hands on training
for the rig crew. Continued drilling with same target of dynamic and static density (ECD/ESD)
of 1.23 sg until depth of 3913 m MD where observed losses, hence proving that the provided
fracture pressure of 1.60 sg was over estimated. Reduced the ESD to 1.17 sg by reduction in
SBP from 670 psi to 370 psi and observed balanced between flow in and flow out, meaning
that even the provided pore pressure of 1.20 sg was not correct. Section 5.1 of the EOWR
shows detailed Managed Pressure Drilling summary of 6’’ hole section.

QHSE is the most important aspect of overall MPD operation; Weatherford crew participated
fully in maintaining and adhering to QHSE standards at rig site. Section 5.3 describes QHSE
performance of MPD crew at rig site.

ROP analysis is shown in section 5.4, RCD bearing assembly and rubbers record with
performance analysis is shown in section 5.5 as well as rubbers evaluation report is shown
in Appendix III, time break down graph analysis performed in 5.6 section, drilling curve in
5.7 and bits & BHA record is shown in section 5.8 of this document.

Section 7 and 8 is brief section of lesson learnt and conclusion with recommendations for the
operation.

Well TD reached on 25th December and RIH with Drillpipe Conveyed Logging (DPL) but could
not pass through the liner shoe (3872 mMD), POOH to surface. Wiper trip to well TD @4258
m MD in MPD mode and rigged down MPD equipment on 30th December 2019. Back loaded
all the MPD equipment and personal on 5th January 2020.

2 PLANNED AND ACHIEVED OBJECTIVES

Planned: Drill 6’’ hole section from 7’’ liner shoe (3891 m MD / 3772 m TVD) to planned TD
of 4191 m MD / 3792 m TVD.

Achieved: Drilled successfully 6’’ hole section from 7’’ liner shoe set at 3872 m MD (3771 m
TVD) beyond the planned TD to 4258 m MD (3799 m TVD). Hence drilled more footage inside
the primary target of Hamra Quartzite than planned one.

Planned: Minimize Influx/loss issues in 6” hole section where loss or gas influx may be
observed in Hamra Quartzite.

Achieved: With closed loop system in place and installation of coriolis flow meter MPD was
utilized not just for monitoring the influxes or losses while drilling but also during tripping and
stripping operations, hence decreased Influx/loss issues and consequences of such events
due to early identification.

Planned: Utilizing MPD technique to minimize overbalance across Hamra Quartzite formation
and apply adequate surface backpressure to properly ascertain the pressure limit by carrying
out Dynamic Pore pressure test.

Achieved: Drilled with minimum overbalanced conditions through a challenging and first ever
horizontal section in Ber Saba field with an adaptable and closed loop system ready to
accommodate the downhole pressure profile given the geo-pressures uncertainty and its
respective potential for events such as kicks or losses. Static pore pressure tests were
performed only, the results of such pore pressure tests were reliable which helped in
estimating the real pore pressure, required surface back pressure (SBP), MPD mud weight
and kill mud weights were adjusted based on such downhole pressure ascertain tests.

Planned: Keep Constant BHP during connection or rig pump off events.

Achieved: Maintained constant bottom hole pressure while performing routine (MPD
connections, MWD survey’s, dynamic flow checks) and non-routine tasks (Stripping in/out,
circulating out trip gases) during drilling operation by application of surface back pressure
(SBP) through MPD choke manifold to adjust bottom hole pressure (BHP) accordingly.

Beside planned objectives, safety for the rig floor crew was increased with Weatherford state
of the art rotating control device (RCD) mounted on annular BOP. RCD enabled trip gas to be
diverted from the rig floor and circulated out from the wellbore without the need to close the
BOP.

5 OPERATIONS

5.1 MPD Operational Summary

MPD semi-auto package arrived to location on 15th November 2019, necessary custom
inspection check carried on 17th November and on the same day spotted MPD equipment in
the designated area. Completed all the MPD equipment rig up on 20th November, followed by
MPD equipment pressure test on the same date.

On 20th November RIH with Halliburton Directional BHA #1 and RIH to 3571 m, where
established reversed circulations, observed returned in the Drillpipe. Town decided to POOH
to surface, on surface observed third party retrievable type float valve (3 ½’’ IF F-type) which
caused returns in reversed circulation, however did not consider installing non-retrievable type
float valve (5R F or G-type) at surface prior deciding POOH to surface.

BHA # 2 RIH on 22nd November to 7’’ liner shoe, dropped the ball to open circulation sub and
displaced 1.23 sg mud weight (MW) with MPD MW of 1.12 sg. Removed bell nipple and
installed bearing assembly. Performed finger printing of MPD package and rig crew training.
Started drilling out cement and shoe track by-passing coriolis flow meter with 800 lpm rate,
418 psi SBP having target Model ECD of 1.23 sg. On-line coriolis flow meter once 100%
formation cuttings observed on shale shaker. Continued drilling with same parameters to 3913
m MD without detecting gain/loss on coriolis flow meter. At 3913 m MD took MWD survey and
after survey once established circulation with model ECD of 1.23 sg, observed losses of 6
m3/hr on coriolis flow meter, however provided fracture pressure was 1.60 sg. Reduced SBP
from 418 psi to 370 psi with target model ECD of 1.22 sg but losses still persisted and it was
not allowed to further lower the ECD because of the initial provided pore pressure of 1.20 sg.
Washed up from 3913 m MD to 7’’ liner shoe at 3872 m with model ECD/ESD of 1.22 sg. After
approval from town, dropped down ECD in steps to minimum of 1.17 sg and observed for any
gain/loss. Following table shows all this process;

Table 4: ESD Reduction for Losses Control

Steps SBP (psi) Model ESD Losses Duration
(sg) Rate (m3/hr) (mints)

1 570 1.21 5.4 20

2 520 1.20 5.3 20

3 470 1.19 4.2 18

4 430 1.18 4 30

5 370 1.17 - 70

At 1.17 sg balanced point achieved indicating no gain/loss in static conditions. Hence proved
that provided pore pressure of 1.20 sg was not correct. Resumed drilling to 3915 m MD with
800 lpm and 215 psi SBP with model ECD of 1.18 sg having 3 m3/hr losses. Reduced SBP to
160 psi to further reduce the model ECD to 1.17 sg with 2.5 m3/hr of losses and drilled ahead
6’’ hole section to the landing point at 3933 m MD with 87.69° of inclination. POOH to surface
required to change bent sub on directional motor. Pumped 3 m 3 of LCM pill of 114 kg/m3 of
concentration at 7’’ liner shoe, displaced into open hole and waited on LCM soaking time.

Started washing down with 1.17 sg target ECD/ESD into open hole, observed motor stalling
leading to higher standpipe pressure and tagged bottom @3933 m MD. Drilled ahead 6’’ hole
from 3933 m MD to 3947 m MD with 1.17 sg ECD without any G/L on coriolis flow meter having
an average ROP of 3 m/hr. Drastic reduction in ROP observed where drilled just 3 m in 14
hours, changed flow rates with SBP but no success, decided to POOH to surface. Stripped
out of hole from 3950 m MD to 7’’ liner shoe with 370 psi SBP and target ESD of 1.17 sg. At
liner shoe displaced well to KMW of 1.17 sg, following schedule shown in Table 5 of this
document, without any losses on coriolis flow meter at end of displacement. POOH to surface,
on surface observed two motor sleeves protector unscrewed which lead to decreased in ROP.

Directional BHA # 4 RIH on 2nd December to 7’’ liner shoe and displaced well to MPD MW of
1.12 sg with target model ECD of 1.17 sg following schedule in Table 6. Washed down to
3950 m MD with 1.17 sg ECD/ESD. Drilled just 1 m with poor ROP, adjusted drilling flow rates
and SBP’s but no success, observed higher SPP and expected plugged BHA. POOH to 3650
m MD while holding 350 psi SBP with target model ESD of 1.17 sg at bottom. Bleed-off
pressure from 5R float valve and started pumping with low rate, observed same higher SPP.
Stripped out of hole to 3500 m MD, dropped the ball for opening circulating sub and displaced
well to 1.17 sg KMW following Table 5. POOH to surface and observed motor bend housing
sleeve unscrewed.

On December 04th RIH Weatherford fishing BHA with Reverse Circulation Junk Bucket (RCJB)
and performed fishing operations in MPD mode with 1.17 sg model ECD without any gain loss
on coriolis flow meter. On surface recovered 03 pieces of Aluminum.

Made 2nd Weatherford fishing run on 06th December with flat junk mill RIH and milled the hole
conventionally 0.8 m with 1.17 sg MW leading 1.20 sg Model ECD without any losses on rig
PVT.

RIH Drilling BHA # 05, slick BHA with TCI bit and drilled from 3952 m to 3968 m with 1.17 sg
ECD without any G/L on coriolis flow meter. Performed static pore pressure at 7’’ liner shoe
with 1.16 sg & 1.15 sg ESD without any inflow from the reservoir. Stripped in hole to bottom
with 1.17 sg ESD, circulated for bottoms up and observed 3.6% total gas and no florescence
on shale shaker. Stripped out of hole to 7’’ liner shoe and performed another static pore
pressure test with 1.14 & 1.13 sg static densities without any flow from the reservoir. Stripped
in hole to 3968 m MD, circulated for bottoms up and observed total gas of 3.6% without any
sign of florescence. Stripped out of hole to 7’’ liner shoe and displaced hole with 1.15 sg KMW.

Directional Drilling BHA # 06 RIH on 10th December to 7’’ liner shoe where hole was displaced
to MPD MW of 1.12 sg and resumed drilling to from 3968 m to 4028 m without any SBP in
dynamic conditions with target ECD/ESD of 1.16 sg, however held 220 psi SBP during drilling
pump-off conditions. While drilling at 4028.25 m coriolis flow meter detected losses of 9 m3/hr.
Stripped out of hole to 7’’ liner shoe and spotted 4 m3 of 110 kg/m3 concentration LCM,
displaced LCM into the open hole and squeezed with SBP. Waited on LCM soaking time,
observed well on trip tanks and having 3 m3/hr static losses. Opened PBL sub and pumped
another LCM pill of 4 m3 and concentration of 400kg/m3, displaced the same in open hole and
squeezed with SBP. Waited on LCM soaking time and observed 3 m3/hr downhole dynamic
losses. Spotted another LCM pills of 450 & 500kg/m3, observed higher SPP while displacing
LCM into open hole. Attempted for reversed circulation but no success. Performed dynamic
flow check observed 0.5 m3/h losses. Removed bearing assembly, installed bell nipple and
started from liner shoe to 3272 m. Performed flow check, observed 200 liters gain, shut in the
well on annular BOP and observed 40 psi stabilized pressure. Removed bell nipple and
installed bearing assembly on annular BOP, started pumping KM of 1.15 sg but observed
plugged kill line. Lined –up from kill line to MPD Rig auxiliary pump line and started POOH
while filling the well with 1.15 sg KMW having 40psi wellhead pressure, while MPD choke
manifold fully closed. At 2680 m performed extended static flow check observing 7 psi choke
pressure. POOH to 1707 m while filling the well with 1.15 sg MW, removed bearing assembly
and installed bell nipple. POOH to surface.

On 14th December Slick BHA # 09 RIH to 7’’ liner shoe where hole was displaced to 1.12 sg
MW without any SBP. Washed down to 4028 m without any SBP in static and dynamic
conditions. Drilled ahead 6’’ hole section from 4028 m to 4043 m with 1 m3/hr downhole losses.
Washed up from 4043 m to 3990 m and then started POOH from 3990 m to 3930 m without
any SBP, where observed flow out on shale shaker. Advised to put SBP for targeting 1.16 sg
ESD and start stripping out of hole but the company man decided to POOH without SBP.
Started washing back to 7’’ liner shoe without any SBP in dynamic and static conditions. At 7’’
liner shoe performed dynamic flow check, observing 240 liters gain on trip tank. Performed
static flow check, seeing 380 liters gain on trip tank. Closed the MPD choke manifold for
pressure build up observed 25 psi pressure on the MPD choke. RIH from 7’’ liner shoe to 3959
m without any SBP having 1.12 sg ESD observed flow increased in trip tank. Shut in the well
on MPD choke and observed 320 psi pressure on MPD choke. Lined-up to rig MGS and

5.4 QHSE Performance

During MPD operations quality, health, safety and environment (QHSE) statistics were
monitored at all times. No employee was injured during MPD drilling operations, Stop Cards
were the method used to identify the hazards.
As MPD operations are different from conventional drilling techniques, extensive hands on
training was conducted for the rig crew to get them trained on the necessary MPD daily routine
operations. Also, briefed them about the communication protocol over the phone in order to
coordinate with Weatherford crew during MPD operations.

For every unusual operation, Pre-job safety meeting was held to discuss the potential hazards
in performing the operation and to ensure that everyone involved in the operation is aware of

what will be done. In every time, there was a change in the operation a detailed work
instruction was written and distributed to all the crews around the rig site, the goal of the work
instructions was to outline the procedures and steps needed.

The number of JSA’s, unsafe act cards and safety meetings conducted on the rig during the
entire well are summarized in Figure 12.

5.5 Rate of Penetration

The primary target Hamra Quartzite is very hard and abrasive formation which is usually
known for slow ROP, conventionally Hamra Quartzite formation is drilled with 1 to 2 m/hr ROP.
It was also one of the objective of MPD on the subject well to bring improvement in overall
ROP while drilling with lower mud weight (less solids in mud system) even though achieving
the required bottom hole pressure with combinations of different surface back pressures in
static and dynamic conditions.

Figure 13 presents instantaneous ROP, average ROP, torque and WOB with respect to
measured depth for BRS-19Bis ST1 borehole while drilling through MPD system. Straight
black line is neutral point separating the ROP from torque and WOB, whereas, green line
presents torque, when this valve is laying on this neutral point, meaning that the interval was
drilled in slide mode to build the required angle. Total footage of 386 m drilled in MPD mode
with an average ROP of 3 m/h for the BRS-19Bis ST1 borehole.

5.6 RCD Performance

Two RCD bearing assemblies were used while drilling the 6” section on BRS-19Bis ST1
consuming total of 16 sealing elements. As the drilling fluid was Oil based the sealing elements
installed always were both composed of polyurethane rubber of 4’’ ID for 5’’ Drillpipe size. The
bearing assemblies were redressed with new elements each trip. There was no incident of
sealing element failed neither during drilling or stripping operations despite the grooving and
wrench marks on Drillpipe tool joints. Below figures present RCD bearing assemblies and
every sealing elements performance while drilling and stripping.

Longer time spent on tripping as two fishing runs for cleaning out the wellbore due to possible
debris from shoe track. Lighter MPD mud weights of 1.12 & 1.10 sg used only for drilling, prior
to POOH to surface hole displaced with kill mud weight of 1.17, 1.16 & 1.15 sg and vice versa
while going for drilling in MPD mode, consuming 5.4 days of total time. LCM pills used to
encounter down hole losses, which lead to wash down in the open hole leading total time for
washing down to 3.125 days.

5.8 Drilling Curve

The 6” hole section of BRS-19Bis ST1 well drilled through Hamra Quartzite formation. It was
expected to be abrasive formation and hence difficult to drill. Before drilling, extensive
fingerprinting exercises were undertaken to benchmark various flow signatures and to allow
the rig crew to become familiar with MPD drilling operation practices. Drilling in MPD mode
started on 23rd November at 23:00 hrs with target model ECD of 1.23 sg. Drilling continued
with the same model ECD until 3913 m, where observed downhole losses. Worked on
curing downhole losses and resumed drilling to 6’’ hole section landing point at 3933 m
MD, where POOH to surface for changing bent sub on motor. Initial 15 m drilled by Bit
Run # 3 were with good ROP, at 3947 m MD dramatic decrement observed in ROP,
leading to POOH to surface to change bit. On surface observed two motor sleeves protector
unscrewed. Run # 4 drilled just a meter and POOH to surface due to motor stalling, observed
motor bend housing sleeve unscrewed once BHA on surface.

Performed fishing operations from 4th December to 07th December to clean hole from possible
7’’ liner shoe breakdown as small Aluminum pieces observed while drilling with Bit Run # 3
and Run # 4.

Slick BHA Run # 5 drilled from 3951 m to 3968 m with model ECD of 1.17 sg, at this depth as
performed lower limit pressure test with minimum of 1.13 sg to determine pore pressure.

On 11th December Bit Run # 6 started drilling with 1.16 sg model ECD to 4028 m, encountered
downhole losses. Pumped LCM pills through BHA and circulating sub, leading to plugged drill
string. POOH to surface while filling the well with 1.16 sg KMW.

15th December slick BHA # 7 drilled from 4028 m to 4043 m without any SBP in static and
dynamic conditions leading to 1.16 sg ECD and 1.12 sg ESD. At 4043 m circulated out influx
through MPD choke manifold.

Bit Run # 8 Directional BHA started drilling on 18th December from 4043 m to 4160 m with
1.15 sg model ECD. Downhole losses events at 4160 m and treated with LCM pills. Resumed
drilling with same model ECD to 4168 m where circulated gas out at 4168 m with 1.16 sg
model ECD and drilled ahead to planned TD 4192 m. Waited on decision, decided to extend
TD to 4258 m. Drilled ahead with same BHA to 4222 mMD.

Last Bit Run # 9 drilled with 1.16 sg ECD to new extended well TD @4258 m, reaching to TD
on 25th December 07:00 Hrs.

6 MPD CONTROL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE

This section of report will cover the performances of MPD semi-automated system.

6.1 Borehole Pressure Profile

MPD is an adaptive drilling technique which on the fly can adjust the bottom hole pressure by
changing SBP to target any given ECD/ESD keeping in mind the limitation of MPD surface
equipment and formation pressure. The provided reservoir and fracture pressure for Hamra
Quartzite was 1.20 and 1.60 sg respectively. Based on provided downhole pressure data MPD
mud weight of 1.12 sg (Statically & Dynamically Underbalanced MW) was selected with
addition of 430 psi SBP through the MPD choke manifold to target ECD of 1.23 sg, to be just
150 psi above the expected pore pressure and avoid any losses while drilling through the
natural fractures present in Hamra Quartzite.

After drilling out shoe track and virgin formation no pore pressure test was conducted and
continued drilling with target model ECD of 1.23 sg till 3913 m MD where losses detected by
Coriolis flow meter. Released just 50 psi SBP (Model ECD of 1.22 sg) to get balance between
flow in/out which did not cure losses. It was not allowed to further release the SBP due to the
expected pore pressure of 1.20 sg.

At 7’’ liner shoe balanced point of 1.17 sg EMW was find out in static conditions by releasing
SBP from 570 to 370 psi. Which verified that provided pore pressure of 1.20 sg was over-
estimated. Drilling continued from 3913 m to 3969 m with 130 – 160 psi SBP and model ECD
of 1.173 sg.

Continued drilling from 3969 m to 4028 m with no SBP while drilling and 230 psi SBP during
connection with target ECD/ESD of 1.158 sg. Detected another downhole losses event at 4028
m, nevertheless MPD system could not adjust to the losses because of the higher drilling mud
weight of 1.12 sg. Conversely loss event was identified by coriolis flow meter as early as it
started reading flow out less than the flow in. At this point further decrease in mud weight to
1.08 sg was suggested with addition of SBP to target the same ECD and have better reaction
to the downhole losses. Drilling continued to 4043 m with no surface back pressure and 1.12
sg MW having target model ECD of 1.161 sg.

At 4044 m slight reduction made to MW (1.10 sg) with addition of 60 psi SBP to target ECD of
1.15 sg and continued drilling to 4145 m. At 4145 m background gas of 19 % observed and
increased SBP to 90 psi to increase model ECD to 1.16 sg. Continued drilling to the well TD
of 4258 m with same model ECD of 1.16 sg.

6.2 Formation Pressure Ascertainment Tests

The intended plan for formation pressure ascertainment tests were to determine only the lower
limit of the drilling operating window once 5 to 10 m of virgin formation from 7’’ liner shoe in
Hamra Quartzite formation is being drilled. However, the plan changed for pore pressure test
to be performed at the landing point of 3933 m MD. Continued drilling within provided pore
pressure of 1.20 sg and fracture pressure of 1.60 sg for Hamra Quartzite formation. Selected
MPD MW of 1.12 sg with initial target model ECD/ESD of 1.23 sg drilled from 7’’ liner shoe to
3913 m, where encountered downhole losses, meaning that provided fracture pressure of 1.60
sg not authentic. Following table shows reduction of static bottom hole pressure in steps from
1.22 sg to 1.17 sg at well depth of 3913 m MD / 3775 m TVD and bit depth at 7’’ liner shoe
(3872 m MD / 3771 m TVD).

After the static pore pressure test at 7’’ liner shoe, confirmed that pore pressure is not 1.20 sg.
Continued drilling with new target model ECD/ESD’s of 1.17 sg to 3968 mMD / 3779 m where
performed another pore pressure test at 3872 m MD bit depth with minimum of 1.13 sg model
ESD without any inflow from the reservoir. Table 14 presents summary of pore pressure test
carried out at 3968 m in static conditions with reduction SBP to achieve the model ESD.

equated to estimated pore pressure of 1.127 sg to 1.13 at 3785 m TVD.

Did not carry out any further pore pressure tests after 4043 m depth. Drilled ahead 6’’ hole

6.3 Kick-Loss Detection system

While drilling BRS-19Bis ST1 borehole, flow out constantly monitored in real time with coriolis
flow meter for detecting any downhole loss or influx from the formation. Selected target ECD
of 1.23 sg was based on provided pore (1.20 sg) and fracture pressure (1.60 sg) data.
Observed first downhole losses event at 3913 m MD while drilling with 1.12 sg MW and 430

Prior to starting of drilling operations and even after drilling certain footage with same bit took
SCR with MPD system online. With every drilling pump rate different SBP applied in order to
keep constant BHP. The below figure illustrate the reaction of the system during such
operations. After the stabilized stand pipe and surface back pressure, for the SCR values the
applied SBP was subtracted.

8 LESSONS LEARNT & RECOMMENDATIONS

8.1 No Formation Ascertain Tests

It was agreed and planned in the MPD drilling program for conducting pore pressure test while
drilling 5 to 10 m of virgin formation from the 7’’ liner shoe.

What was done?

The planned was changed for pore pressure test and it was decided to perform pore pressure
test after drilling to the landing point at 3932 m MD. Drilled from 7’’ liner shoe to the first losses
point at 3913 m with 1.23 sg ECD.

What is recommended?
It is highly recommended to perform periodic pore and fracture pressure tests after drilling few
meters of virgin formation to re-visit the MW and target ECD/ESD’s.

8.2 Higher MW’s

Selected MPD drilling MW of 1.12 sg was selected based on 1.20 sg pore pressure and 1.60
sg of fracture pressures. While drilling the 6’’ hole section downhole pressure was lower than
the provided one.

What was done?

Continued drilling with 1.12 sg MW after encountering downhole losses. It was recommended
to reduce MW to 1.08 sg but not agreed.

What is recommended?
MPD is an adaptive drilling technique, reduced MW with addition of surface back pressure will
give good reaction in case of losses as well as it must be also allowed to reduce the SBP to
see balanced between flow in/out. In case of any influx SBP can be applied within the safe
limitations of MPD equipment as well as the formation integrity pressure.

8.3 No PWD Tools

There was no pressure while drilling tools were used to get downhole pressure data.

What was done?

Weatherford MPD simulation software used for calculating the target ECD/ESD’s with given
parameters of flow in, SBP at certain depths. These MPD simulations values were reliable to
take any decision.

What is recommended?
PWD tools are recommended to use while carrying out MPD operations. MPD simulation
software can be re-calibrate/fine-tune with PWD tools and in case of if PWD tools are not
working then MPD simulation software values can be used.

8.4 Communication with driller

Communication made with driller, Halliburton Directional, Mud Engineer and OilServ DSV via
rig site telephone system (provided by Mudlogging Company) is not efficient way for
communication in MPD operations.

What was done?

For performing any specific operations, individuals telephone calls were made to inform each
about the next operations.

January 2020 Managed Pressure Drilling Services Page 55 of 60

Managed Pressure Drilling EOWR
BRS-19Bis ST1, 6’’ Section
OilServ/GBRS, Algeria

What is recommended?
Radio must be provided to easy communication and everyone is aware whenever someone
is communicating through the Radios.

8.5 RCD Platform

It was difficult to work at the RCD due to non-availability of working platform. It was also
observed that the bolts on the RCD bowl flange were not tightened properly as it was difficult
to hammer without the platform which caused minor leak during pressure testing. During
change of RCD bearing, operator has to go up the RCD in cherry picker.

What was done?

The RCD bolts were tightened properly and pressure tested for the integrity of the RCD bowl
which was found to be holding.

What is recommended?
It is strongly recommended to have RCD working platform for the safety of the personnel
involved in operation.

8.6 MPD Equipment Mobilization to Location

Due to some unforeseen reasons MPD equipment arrived to location on 15th November.

What was done?

Rig was stand-by from 12th November to 20th November while waiting on MPD equipment to
arrive on location and rig up. Algeria customs cleared equipment on 17th November and then
started online MPD rig-up, meaning that rig has to wait to finish the MPD rig-up.

What is recommended?
Plan in advance for mobilization of equipment keeping in mind the time taken by the host
country costume policy and procedures. All of the MPD rig up can be performed off-line expect
installing of RCD bowl on Annular BOP.

8.7 Geomechanics study of Hamra Quartzite Formation

There was no wellbore stability data or wellbore collapse pressure available while drilling 6’’
hole section.

What was done?

It was not allowed to lower the ECD/ESD instantly and have to wait for town to decide.

What is recommended?
It is highly recommended to perform Geomechanics study of Ber Saba field particularly for
Hamra Quartzite formation as to determine wellbore collapse pressure and directly reduce the
ECD/ESD with reduction in SBP to minimize downhole losses, and at same time avoid
borehole collapse with reference to provided collapse pressure data.

9 CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS

This report can be concluded in below points;

 MPD mitigated downhole pressure uncertainty and has significantly improved the
efficiency of drilling operations on 6’’ hole section.
 1.60 sg of fracture pressure and 1.20 sg of pore pressure provided data was not
accurate, as the real pore and fracture pressures were way lower than actual one.
 With utilization of MPD technique on subject well, MPD helped to find out estimated
pore pressure (1.127 ~ 1.13 sg) and fracture pressure (1.16 sg).
 MPD helped to manage the problems of massive fluid losses associated with presence
of natural fractures while drilling Hamra Quartzite formation.
 MPD helped to drill the required formation beyond the planned depth. (86 m footage
than the planned one).
 With use of lower mud weight and combination of different SBP’s the required bottom
hole pressure achieved without adjusting and waiting for mud weights to change.
 MPD have significantly improved the ROP, since have considerably reduced drilling
time.
 For the calculation of downhole pressure, Weatherford MPD simulation software used
to adjust in real time the required ECD/ESD’s.
 MPD system actively managed constant bottom pressure in static/dynamic conditions
and monitoring the well for kick/loss detection.
 BRS-19Bis ST1 is the first horizontal well drilled in Ber Saba field hence will improve
production of this field and will explore future field potential.

Based on operational experience below recommendations are to improve the operation

further:

 It is valuable to identify pore pressure and fracture pressure during drilling operations
by performing periodic tests. As the provided pore and fracture pressure data was not
correct in case of the subject well.
 To save time, downhole pressure ascertain tests can be performed dynamically, at the
in-situ hole depth without stripping in/out to the last casing/liner shoe.
 Use of pressure while drilling (PWD) can further enhanced the downhole pressure
recordings.
