SECTION B - POETRY

2. Read the following poem carefully and answer ALL the questions that follow.

Concert

Brother Kingsley had the swiftest legs,

they would move like sharpened blades
cutting through finishing line tapes
on sports days when we would receive
5 for prizes, dictionaries and holy Bibles.

He was a dancer, could split, snap-fall,

boogie, gallows, and shuffle better
than any other boy who called himself dancer.
As soon as his heels touched ground
10 they would lift up again, pushing against
slow air, seeking to align themselves
with the fastest moving currents in the atmosphere.

At the talent show, we were sure he'd win.

The entire school was behind him, cheering
15 his every tum, split and spin, he was winning
till he affected a clutching movement he had seen
the older men practice.

Miss Stirling judged that move

too adult and dangerous to youth.
20 She awarded the prize to a girl
who rattled out, with nervous pebbles
in her mouth, a dull unbumished memory gem 1•

Dressed as she was in a drooping slipper-satin

christian-quattie2 dress, we booed the results
25 of this unfair contest and spoke for years
of how they robbed him.

1
A memory gem is a short quotation (usually from the Bible or a famous person)
2
Quattie means of little or no value

SECTION C - PROSE FICTION

3. Read the following passage carefully and answer ALL the questions that follow.

Michael went back inside for two more bottles and they drank them. Then, in the twilight, they
fell asleep, slumped up against each other. In the distance the sun slipped unobserved and lonely
into the cold sea.

Leila, the taller and lighter of the two girls, obediently followed her friend as they walked
5 purposefully to the end of the street and around the corner by Jumbies rum bar. There they both
faltered and listened to the smoky noises leaking through the closed shutters and underneath the
crooked door.

Even from this distance it was clear that the men were both asleep. They approached, Leila feeling
much the more foolish for having encouraged Millie to spend a hopeful, wasted hour outside
10 Government House while knowing in her heart that neither Bradeth nor Michael would come.
She lagged behind a little.

Millie pushed Bradeth's shoulder and he shook himself away from Michael. Then Michael's somnolent
head fell quickly, but he woke before it made contact with the ground.

'You both have a nice sleep, then?' asked Millie, her hands firmly on her hips.

15 The men rubbed their eyes and stretched. Bradeth explained, 'We just decided to take a nap and
check out what a bit of peace and quiet feel like, but it's not looking like we going finish the test.'

'I see,' said Millie. 'Well, now that the testing done maybe you don't mind testing your backside
up to Sandy Bay with me where my aunt wants to have a word with you about something.'

Bradeth moved to get up. 'Toosie?'

20 'It's only one aunt I has in Sandy Bay, or maybe you hear of a next one.'

'I just checking, that's all,' Bradeth stood, hind legs first, and reached up to hold his head straight.

'So you get hangover as well?' asked Millie.

'It's just a little headache that I had for a long time now,' said Bradeth. 'A long time now.'
