GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT

CHAPTER -1

Representation of Geographical Features

A. Answer the following questions in brief :

Q1. What are topographical maps ? What do these maps show?

Ans: Topographical maps are large scale multipurpose maps representing

information regarding relief and cultural features. These maps show
elevations, relief, drainage and vegetation and man-made features like roads,
railways ,settlements etc.

Q2. Name the Important elements of a topographical map.

Ans: Colours, scale and conventional signs are some important elements of a
toposheet.

Q3. What is the significance of blue colour in a toposheet ?

Ans : Blue colour in a toposheet signifies water features or water bodies.

Q 4. Name any two features which are shown in red on a toposheet.

Ans: Settlements and roads(also huts and temples) are shown in red on a
toposheet.
Q5. Name any two colours which help us to infer about the occupation of the
people on a toposheet .

Ans: Yellow colour on a toposheet indicates agricultural/farming practice as

an important occupation of the people of that area. Green colour indicates
lumbering and animal rearing to be the main occupation of people living in an
area.

Q6. Define contour line.

Ans: Lines which join places of the same height are called contour lines.

Q7. Define scale.

Ans : Scale is the ratio between a distance measured on a map and the
corresponding distance on the Earth.

Q8. What are conventional signs?

Ans: The symbols which are used to show different features on maps are
known as conventional signs. Most of these symbols have definite or fixed
meanings.

B. Answer the following questions in detail :

Q1)Analyse the significance of various colours used in toposheets.

Ans :The various colours used in toposheets are :

Blue: Used for indicating water bodies. Dark blue signifies deeper areas and
light blue signifies areas of lesser depth. Wells, tanks etc are also indicated by
blue colour.

Red: All types of settlements as well as roads, huts and temples are shown in
red colour.

Yellow: This colour indicates cultivable / cultivated land .

Brown :Represents contour lines.

Green :Represents vegetation , forested area, orchards, trees and scrubs.

Q2)Explain the various types of scales used in toposheets.

Ans :The two scales used in toposheets are the Linear scale and
Representative Fraction.

Linear scale:

• It is the easiest method of describing a map scale.

• It is usually written on the map as 1 cm to 10 km or 1 inch to 50 miles.
• The value on the left-hand side of the statement always indicates the
map distance.

Representative Fraction:

• In this method the map scale is expressed as a numeric ratio. The

numerator represents the map distance and it is always expressed as a
unity. The denominator represents the corresponding ground distance,
i.e., one unit on the map is equivalent to a number of units on the
ground.
• R.F = Distance on the map / Distance on the ground
• Both the numerator and the denominator are expressed in the same
unit of measurement and therefore it is a dimensionless fraction.

Q3. Explain the procedure to measure the distance on a map along an erratic
path.

Ans :The distance along erratic paths i.e., the coastlines, rivers, streams can be
measured by using a thread.

• Steps :

• (i) Take a piece of thread and mark the point with a pen which shows the
starting point.

• (ii) Spread the thread along the line following each curve till the last
point.

• (iii) Now stretch the thread along the scale to find the length.
E. Questions Based on Geographical Skills
Carefully observe the given part of toposheet and answer the following
questions:

1. Which is the main occupation of the people? Explain by giving a reason.

Ans: lumbering is one of the occupations due to the presence of

forests(indicated by green colour).Another occupation is agriculture where we
see yellow wash . Yellow on a toposheet means cultivable/cultivated land.

2. Identify any two man-made features.

Ans:Tank and settlements

3. What are the means of irrigation used in the region ?

Ans: River , well and tank.

4. What is the scale of the map?

Ans: Scale is RF= 1:50,000

5. Identify any two natural features

Ans: River and forests .
