IV. Procedure:

Preliminary Activities

4. Classroom Rules

A. Engage (The Mystery of the Book)

The teacher will break up the class into smaller groups and give each
group a book review to discuss and evaluate regarding "The Battle of
Marawi." Their task is to pinpoint the essential elements of the review, like
the author's viewpoint, the book's synopsis, and the style assessment. After
reading the material, the students participate in a class discussion at which
time each group presents its observations.

B. Explore
● After the activity, the teacher will ask several questions to the students to
reflect.
1. What are your observations when you’re having our activity?
2. After reading the book, did the reviewer learn anything new or come to any
realizations regarding the "Battle of Marawi"? How, exactly?
3. Does the review address the book's writing style in any way?
4. What was the primary motivation for the reviewer's decision to assess or
analyze "The Battle of Marawi"?
5. Why is it crucial that we recognize the author's hard work and originality in
creating a gripping book review?
● The teacher will explain that the activity helps the students gain a deeper
understanding of the key components such as the author's opinion,
summary of the book, and evaluation of the writing style. This helps them
recognize the structure and purpose of a book review.
● The teacher will then connect the activity to their new lesson. State the
learning objectives and explain to students that they will be discussing a
book review and identify its structure and guidelines in writing.

C. Explain
● The teacher will start the lesson by introducing what is Book Review.
○ Book Review
■ A specialized form of academic writing in which a reviewer
evaluates the contribution to knowledge of scholarly works
such as academic books and journal articles.
■ NOT A SUMMARY and usually ranges from 250 to 750
words.
■ A critical assessment, evaluation of a work. analysis, or
evaluation of a work.
■ Involves your skills in critical thinking and recognizing
arguments.
■ "Critique" does not equate to the words "cynicism" and
"pessimism".
■ Do not just share mere opinions; rather, they use both proofs
and logical reasoning to substantiate their opinions.
■ Process ideas and theories, revisit and extend ideas in a
specific field of study, and present analytical responses.
○ Book Review Structures:
■ Introduction (around 5% of the paper)

● Title of the book/article

● Writer's name
● Writer's thesis statement
■ Summary (around 10% of the paper)
● Writer's objective or purpose
● Methods used (if applicable)
● Major findings or claims
■ Review/ Critique (in no particular order) (around 75% of the
paper)
● Appropriateness of methodology to support the
arguments
● Theoretical soundness
● Soundness of explanation in relation to other
available information & experts
● Sufficiency of explanation
● Other perspectives in explaining the concepts and
ideas
● Coherence of ideas
■ Conclusion (around 10% of the paper)
● Overall impression of the work
● Scholarly value of the reviewed article/book
● Benefits to the intended audience
● Suggestion for future directions
○ Book Review Guidelines in Writing:
1. Read the article or book to be reviewed carefully to
get its main concept.
2. Reread it to get the arguments being presented.
3. Relate the content of the article or book to what you
already know about.
4. Focus on discussing how the book treats the topic
and not the topic itself.
5. Analysis should be anchored on the theories
presented by the book or article writer.
6. Examine whether the findings are adequately
supported or not.
7. Analyze the type of analysis the writer used (quanti,
quali, case study) and how it supports the arguments
and claims.
8. Suggest some ways on how the writer can improve
his/her reasoning or explanation.
9. Discuss how the same topic is explained from another
perspective. Compare the explanation to another
expert from the same field of study.
10. Point out other conclusions or interpretations that the
writer missed out. Present other ideas that need to be
examined.
11. Examine the connections between ideas and how
they affect the conclusions and findings.
12. Show your reaction to the writer's ideas and present
an explanation. You can either agree or disagree as
long as you can support your stand.
13. Suggest some alternative methods and processes of
reasoning that would result in a more conclusive
interpretation.

D. Elaborate
Four groups will be formed from the students. Every group will choose a
book that they have read before or are currently reading through. Their task
is to make an outline of a book review. They will have 10 minutes to finish
the task and present their works after.
