You Never Know: BLACKPINK - October 2nd, 2020

On the day when I laughed hard

Why is the night darker?
It keeps bringing me down
Down, down
Hmm, the words that everyone said so easily
Maybe you can hear it soon
I've heard enough I've heard enough
Of the things that I'm not

Even if the whole world changes

I'm still the same
I dreamed of this path I walked
As it was then, as it was then
The first time I danced every day
I was left there
But you'll never know unless you walk in my shoеs
You'll never know, my tangled strings
'Causе everybody sees what they wanna see
It's easier to judge me than to believe
The old thoughts I hid deeply
Sometimes grabbing me and tormenting me
The more I do, I'ma shine, baby
You know they ain't got a shot on me

Sunday night, I've been swallowed by my bed

I've been all over my head
Wonderin' if I gotta try and pretend
I don't know what day it is
I'm afraid I'll find myself hoping to know
The brighter that light gets
My shadow is getting longer
When it's too dazzling
Will I be able to see behind you?

Even if the whole world changes

I'm still the same
I dreamed of this path I walked
As it was then, as it was then
The first time I danced every day
I was left there

But you'll never know unless you walk in my shoes

You'll never know, my tangled strings
'Cause everybody sees what they wanna see
It's easier to judge me than to believe
The old thoughts I hid deeply
Sometimes grabbing me and tormenting me
The more I do, I'ma shine, baby
You know they ain't got a shot on me
You can't sink, I know well
I can't fly while looking at the ground
Across the clouds, it's still bright
I've been drawing in the picture
Even in the torn places
So I can empty everything and laugh
I wanna face me, who I didn't want to see, eh
I remember, so I'll be okay
Make flowers bloom in my blue room
You Know I'll always be waiting

But you'll never know unless you walk in my shoes

You'll never know, my tangled strings
'Cause everybody sees what they wanna see
It's easier to judge me than to believe
The old thoughts I hid deeply
Sometimes grabbing me and tormenting me
The more I do, I'ma shine, baby
You know they ain't got a shot on me
Discussion - Social and Cultural Issues

Light green - Persons:

“Causе everybody sees what they wanna see,

It's easier to judge me than to believe” tells us how people are quick to say
something without thinking twice about how their words can be insensitive to others.
This represents how our society is judgmental and that people are quick to make
assumptions about other people as it appears to be the norm because it is easier to
‘label’ people by their first impression.

“But you'll never know unless you walk in my shoеs, You'll never know, my
tangled strings” shows how people make judgements about others when they hardly
know what is really going on in their lives. It also refers to the lack of empathy that
people have to criticize others when they might be dealing with hardships in their
personal lives. Therefore this demonstrates how some people lack compassion and the
ability to understand others as well as being more socially aware.

“I can’t fly while looking at the ground” is associated with how people try to strive
and overcome challenges but a minor obstacle or barrier is preventing them from doing
so. This stems from a common social issue amongst a lot of people as many struggle to
overcome their personal problems whether it is to keep on creating content on the
media despite receiving a lot of hate and mean comments or one of them might be to
become financially independent during the present time of inflation, these are
considered the social and cultural issues that people often experience in their daily
lives.

Blue - Technology:

“Maybe you can hear it soon” refers to how quick assumptions can be made about
celebrities and people of popularity to spread through the media like wildfire. This raises
social issues in our contemporary lives as technology allows the communication of
dishonest information and comments to be made about people through social media
which causes the interactions in our environment to become negative. A negative social
environment therefore influences people to be more ignorant and impulsive on what
they say and how they act or behave around others.
Pink - Power:

“I’ve heard enough, I’ve heard enough, Of the things that I’m not” refers to how
harmless words can become comments which collectively can impact how people feel
about themselves, others or things. They can also manipulate and influence an
individual to think negatively about themselves which affects their overall self worth. It
also symbolises a power dynamic between the people and influencers in our society as
we have the power to judge our content creators. This can contribute to a significant
social issue in our society as people can easily influence others to think the way they
want them to think, mainly for a negative purpose.

“The old thoughts I hid deeply, Sometimes grabbing me and tormenting me”
refers to the extent in which these negative comments can have a detrimental effect on
one’s mental health, which can often lead someone to become depressed, inflict self
harm, gain eating disorders, abuse drugs, suicide and irregular sleeping patterns . This
reveals one of the prevalent social issues existing today which is cyberbullying as the
statistics from the eSafety Commissioner states that ‘44% of young people in Australia
have reported a negative online experience in the past six months.

Dark green - Society:

“Causе everybody sees what they wanna see,

It's easier to judge me than to believe” tells us how people are quick to say
something without thinking twice about how their words can be insensitive to others.
This represents how our society is judgmental and that people are quick to make
assumptions about other people as it appears to be the norm because it is easier to
‘label’ people by their first impression.

Purple - Identity:

“Wonderin' if I gotta try and pretend” and “I'm afraid I'll find myself hoping to
know” discusses how idols, celebrities and influencers are always criticised for the way
they act, present themselves, socialise and interact with people. As a result, public
criticism can become a form of peer pressure influencing social media stars to act
differently more towards people's expectations of them as if they have to ‘pretend’ to be
a different person in order to be accepted in society’s eyes. This demonstrates a well
known cultural issue in our society causing people to change their physical appearance
and identity for the satisfaction of others.

Scars to your Beautiful: Alessia Cara - November 13th, 2015

She just wants to be beautiful

She goes unnoticed, she knows no limits
She craves attention, she praises an image
She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor

Oh, she don't see the light that's shinin'

Deeper than the eyes can find it
Maybe we have made her blind
So she tries to cover up her pain
And cut her woes away
'Cause covergirls don't cry
After their face is made
But

There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark

You should know you're beautiful just the way you are
And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

She has dreams to be an envy, so she's

Starving, you know, covergirls eat nothin'
She says, "Beauty is pain and there's beauty in everything, what's a little bit of hunger?
I can go a little while longer," she fades away
She don't see her perfect, she don't understand she's worth it
Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface, oh, oh
So to all the girls that's hurtin', let me be your mirror
Help you see a little bit clearer the light that shines within

There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark

You should know you're beautiful just the way you are
And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

No better you than the you that you are

No better you than the you that you are
No better life than the life we're livin'
No better life than the life we're livin'
No better time for your shine, you're a star
No better time for your shine, you're a star
Oh, you're beautiful, oh, you're beautiful

There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark

You should know you're beautiful just the way you are
And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful
Discussion - Social and Cultural Issues

Purple - Identity:

“Oh, she don't see the light that's shinin, Deeper than the eyes can find it” refers
to how people and often young girls and women in society struggle to see the beauty
within themselves as they are self conscious about their appearance and body image. It
gives an insight about how young women do not often realise that beauty is found within
out of reach but it is found in people’s hearts. This poses a major cultural issue in our
society with people trying to replicate society’s perspective of a perfect body image in
order to gain more confidence and a higher self esteem. It also revolves around the
development of social issues as people are striving to become what society perceives
as the ‘ideal body image’. And as a result of trying to maintain that ‘unrealistic’
expectation, their true identity will slowly change due to the lack of appreciation for who
they are individually.

“I can go a little while longer, she fades away” shows us the extremities that young
females go through by putting themselves through starvation in order to be ‘pretty’ as
portrayed in the media. The consequences of starvation could include eating disorders,
weight loss, loss of appetite or low blood pressure. This can trigger social issues in our
society as adopting these dangerous habits and mindsets can overall promote and
encourage an unhealthy diet culture in the community.

Yellow - Culture:

“Cause covergirls don't cry, After their face is made” and “Beauty is pain” pushes
the idea of getting plastic surgery done in order to look ‘beautiful’ like the models
perceived on magazines. This gives people a fixed mindset to restrictively think that
beauty is hard to achieve and that it is a ‘one way route’. Therefore this can further
create more social and cultural problems in our society as it influences people to place
someone’s ‘beauty and appearance’ on a pedestal as if it was something worth
worshiping. This could then lead to a ‘pretty privilege’ culture in the society as people
with it are more advantaged as they have higher status than other people. It could be a
future problem as it can result in an undeveloped social way of thinking.
Light green - Persons:

“She craves attention” and “She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor” refers to
how a lot of women and girls nowadays are seeking attention in order to be noticed and
praised by the people around them. And in this case this mainly stems from the need of
feeling accepted by the people they interact with. Therefore the idea of validation can be
interconnected with being perceived as beautiful because beauty is seen as something
‘good’ in humanity. This could then lead to major social and cultural issues in society as
some people are being isolated and left out for the way they look and act when it is
something beyond their control.

Blue - Technology:

“Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface” shows us that beauty is far more
valuable beneath the layers of all of the unrealistic beauty standards and expectations
that the media influences people through the use of online tools such as face and body
filters. Therefore the manipulation of filters in social media apps can cause major social
issues in our society today as it has the ability to brainwash others into thinking that they
are insecure without it which can lower people’s self confidence.
