Interpretive Comments for NPS/OPS RT-PCR Swab Results
Positive (CT <=30): SARS-CoV-2 RNA detected, Low CT values indicate high infectious viral load. Transmission based
precautions needed until 14 days from symptom onset or from 1st PCR positive. For a test based strategy of cure, 2 negative
PCR results 24 hours apart should be recorded, Protonged shedding can be seen in critical illness and immune compromised
patients and these patients should be regarded as infectious to 21 days.
Reactive (CT >30):High CT values >30 indicate need for home isolation. The PCR test should be repeated atter 72 hours if
symptomatic or after contact with a postive patient
Inconelusive: Usually seen in patients clearing COVID-19 infection - CT values are not reportable for inconclusive results,
The PCR test should be repeated after 72 hours if symptomatic or after contact with a positive patient
Negative:SARS-CoV2 virus RNA NOT detected. if COVID-19 is sil suspected based on exposure history, together with other
