Title: DOH: 2 fireworks death recorded

Author; Rhodina Villanueva

Date Published: January 6, 2024

Publication: PhilStar Global

Summary: The Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines reported two

deaths and 15 new cases of Fireworks-Related Injuries (FWRI) during New Year

celebrations. One fatality occurred when a man lit a cigarette near a firecracker

storage room, and his companion also died from injuries. The incidents included four

stray bullet injuries and 11 due to fireworks. Of the total 600 injuries, 592 were due

to fireworks, one from watusi ingestion, and seven were stray bullet injuries. Most

cases happened at home or in the streets, primarily involving males. The top

fireworks causing injuries were kwitis, 5-star, pla-pla, whistle bomb, luces, boga, and

fountain. The DOH noted that illegal fireworks were responsible for four out of ten

cases.

Problem: 2 people were reportedly found dead due to fireworks.

Research Question: “Why do people continuously use firecrackers despite

documented injuries to humans, birds, and animals, as highlighted in numerous
articles?"

Solution: By Developing an innovative alternative to traditional firecrackers,

exploring the integration of advanced LED lights technology, projection techniques,
and software-driven precision control for creating visually appealing and
synchronized audio-visual displays. This research aims to design a safer and more
environmentally friendly alternative to fireworks, mitigating the risks associated with
injuries to humans, birds, and animals.

Projector fireworks offer a safer alternative to traditional fireworks by eliminating

the need for explosive materials, significantly reducing the risk of burns, eye injuries,
and traumatic incidents. There are about 1,000 times as many birds in the air around
the fireworks site on New Year's Eve as there are on other nights, with peak counts of
10,000 to 100,000 times the average.
Reportedly, 5000 Bird deaths had happened in Bebee, Arkansas on 2012. In
addition, pets suffer from fireworks due to their heightened sensitivity to loud noises.
The loud explosions and bright lights can cause stress, anxiety, and fear in animals,
leading to behaviours such as hiding, shaking, or attempting to escape. The
behaviour of projector fireworks is predictable and controlled, minimizing the risks
of unpredictable flight paths or malfunctions.
Additionally, projector fireworks do not release harmful chemicals, addressing
concerns about air and environmental pollution, making it Eco- Friendly! The
absence of combustion-related pollutants contributes to a cleaner and safer
environment. With minimal fire hazards and no sparks or embers, projector
fireworks further reduce the potential for property damage and wildfires, especially
in dry or windy conditions.

Mung beans, or Vigna radiata “Monggo” in Filipino, is a legume plant of the

Fabaceae family that is also known as green gram or yellow gram and was native

from the Indian Subcontinent. It's an important pulse consumed all over the world,

especially in Asian countries, and has a long history of usage as traditional medicine

since it is an excellent source of protein, dietary, fibres, minerals, and vitamins.

Like other types of beans, Mung Beans have their own varieties. According to

an article by Jinwoo Cheon, based on Iowa State University, the varieties of mung

beans in the United States include Berken and Tex sprout. Berken has a medium-

large, evenly-sized, bright green, seeded variety that produces large sprouts and was

developed by selection from a single plant in a field of jumbo type mung beans. On

the other hand, Tex sprout is an improved mung bean bred in Asia to suit the tropical

environment in the U.S and South America. It was known for its high bean and

sprout yields, wide adaptability, large beans, inability to lodging and breaking, and

its erect growth.

Where in Australia, based on Australian Mungbean Association, there are five

(5) varieties that exist in the global market: Jade- Au, Crystal, Celera II- Au, Satin II,

and Regur. Jade- Au was adapted to the northern region, suitable for spring planting

and conventional summer planting. Its characteristics are large seeded, and has a

shiny coat. On the contrary, Crystal has low levels of hard seed, making it best for

cooking and processing markets. A cross between breeding lines, it has a similar

lodging resistance to Emerald that has a relatively tall, erect variety. It has the same

appearance as Jade Au. Celera II- Au, on the other hand, is grown for niche markets

in many Asian and European Countries. It offers yield stability under high disease
pressure. Its characteristics small seeded and has a shiny green colour. Satin II, a

dull green mung bean known for its superior seed quality with increased seed size,

and improved appearance. And last, Regur a dark grey seed. The Japanese market

demands this variant as for the reason it's more tolerant to waterlogging than all of

the mung bean varieties.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to provide guidance for a deeper understanding of

the four chosen primary nutrient sources; clay, loamy, slit, sandy and one with just

water and cotton, and their correlation to the growth of the chosen mung bean

variety. The study will also be delimited into one variety of mung bean; depending on

what will be available on the public market or what will be the convenient option to

the researchers.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY
Objective of the Study

The objective of this study was to determine the germination rate of mung

beans on the different types of soil, namely: clay, loamy, slit, sandy, and one with

water and cotton.

Procedure of the Study

This study has five (5) steps in terms of conducting the experiment:

1. It begins at planting eight (8) seeds of Mung bean on each type of primary

nutrient sources.

2. Secondly, pour 45 ml of water to the mung bean from the first to last day of

observation.

3. Next, a ruler will be utilized to measure the height of the sprouts daily.

4. Lastly, their germination rate will be observed in a span of ten (10) days.
