EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVESS OF NYMPHAEA NELEMBU L.

AS AN
ALTERNATIVE LARVICIDE

EVALUATING THE LARVICIDAL EFFECTS/ACTIVITY OF NYMPHAEA

NELUMBO L. (NATIVE LOTUS)

Mosquitoes are disruptive species that seem to find ways to survive wherever they go.
Mosquitos are a family of small flies known as Culicidae. Mosquitos have two
classifications, the Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus that commence in discrete
habitats that embody water. Mosquitos breed most of the time in the lentic aquatic system
which is predominant in their population which includes mating, development of larvae,
resting, and swarming.

Mosquitos are the carriers for some humanity’s most deadly ilnesses and multitudinous
diseases. Mosquitos is a type of species that poses a threat to human health because
Human blood is mosquito’s fundemental source of protien for them to lay eggs. They
don’t only carry one type of disease but various different type of ilness and diseases like
malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filarias, zika fever, skin irritatons or commonly known as
mosquito-borne diseases that are surely lethal to humannhealth.

Nymphaea nelumbo L. is one of the explanation that can efficaciously use a larvicide
as opposed to mosquitos. researchers tested the extracted liquid of Nymphaea nelumbo L
o n both classifications of mosquitos the Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus.
Nymphaea nelumbo L. has been studied to have larvicidal property and was used as a
medicinal herb for over 1500 years, it has anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and anti-
bacterial properties. It did not only kill larvae mosquito it also encrease the alkalinity of
water.

from what I can tell, nymphaea nelumbo. or the indigenous lotus works well as a
substitute larvicide for mosquitoes. According to the results of the bioassay experiment,
larvae lasted for 24 to 48 hours after seeing no symptoms of movements. The
experiment's outcome provides evidence that nymphaea nelumbo l. is among the most
effective methods for eliminating mosquitoes, particularly in certain lentic environments.
Looking more closely and thoroughly at the use of Nymphaea Nelumbo L is such a
remarkable discovery and experimentation because, in addition to being successful at
killing mosquitoes, it also reduces people's fear of contracting illnesses carried by
mosquitoes by lessening their psychological influence. It can also have a significant
influence on our society since, in addition to killing mosquito larvae, it also cleans canals,
which is good for our community's health.
