SUMMARIZATION OF RIZAL LAW

Republic Act 1425, commonly known as the Rizal Law, was passed on June 12, 1956. This
law recognizes Dr. Jose Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines, as a symbol of the
nation. Its main objective is to foster a sense of nationalism, particularly among the
youth, by educating them about Rizal's life, works, and writings. Through this law, future
Filipinos are expected to be enlightened and educated about their history and heritage.

The Rizal Law requires all public and private schools, colleges, and universities to include
courses on Rizal's life, works, and writings. The law highlights the importance of Rizal's
novels, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," which are significant sources of
patriotism and national pride. Education is seen as the primary weapon of reorientation
after World War II, and the youth are considered the bearers of the country's future.
Therefore, they were given much importance.

The law faced opposition from the Catholic Church due to the perceived anti-Catholic
sentiments in Rizal's works. However, supporters of the law argued that the novels
aimed to instill civic consciousness, national dignity, personal pride, and patriotism in
Filipinos rather than discredit the Church. After much debate, the law was passed with
provisions to appease the opposition, such as removing the term "compulsion" and
adding an exemption clause for students on certain conditions.

The passage of the Rizal Law signifies the triumph of democracy, with supporters and
opponents playing crucial roles in shaping the legislation. It reaffirms the importance of
Rizal's contributions to the nation and the need for the youth to understand and
appreciate these contributions. The law plays a significant role in shaping the national
identity and fostering a sense of patriotism among Filipinos.
