When it comes to twentieth century American
architecture, one name is mentioned more often
than most: Frank Lloyd Wright.
So widely revered is Wright (1867-1959) that he entered Pop
culture consciousness when Simon & Garfunkel, one of the
best-selling duos in music history, paid tribute with “So Long,
Frank Lloyd Wright.”
Wright was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin. Legend
speaks of his mother prophesying about her unborn child be-
coming someone who would create historic buildings. She was
not wrong. Her son’s distinct style helped him become one of
the biggest forces in American architecture.
Raised in rural Wisconsin, Wright’s design style, often
known as “Prairie School,” is marked by horizontal lines, at
roofs and overhanging eaves that intend to evoke the wide and
at prairie landscape found in the American Midwest. Wright
was a proponent of designing buildings to ow in harmony with
the environment. Across his legendary career, Wright designed
a total of 1,114 architectural works, 532 of which were realized.
Much like Simon & Garfunkel, we sing Wright’s praises
with a selection of some of his best-known works.

Headquarters
Flashback to 1936, the S.C. Johnson & Son,
Inc. company, in Racine, Wisconsin, was
preparing to embark on construction of a
new administration building. H.F. Johnson
Jr., the third-generation president and CEO
of S.C. Johnson & Son, reportedly pushed
“pause” on existing design plans to revisit
the concept of the administration building,
and in doing so sought the help of Wright.
The Administration Building is based on
Wright’s design, which includes extensive
use of Pyrex glass tubing, and opened
in 1939. The building includes 43 miles
of the tubing. Eleven years after the
Administration Building opened,
Wright and Johnson teamed up again

The Walter House
at Cedar Rock
The Lowell and Agnes Walter House in Quasqueton, Iowa,
embodies the common themes of Wright’s Usonian approach:
a one-story, horizontal structure, with an abundance of natural light throughout. The design
was aimed at efficiency and affordability and influenced the evolution of ranch style homes.

Taliesin
This Spring Green, Wisconsin, house served as Wright’s primary residence from 1911 to 1959. Wright
built Taliesin on his favorite boyhood hill in the Wisconsin River valley homesteaded by his Welsh

Taliesin West
Taliesin West is nestled in the desert foothills of the McDowell
Mountains in Scottsdale, Arizona. Set on 400 acres and serving
as Wright’s winter home until his death in 1959, the architect
conceived a desert utopia of low-slung buildings designed to reflect
the sweeping expansiveness of the desert. Wright built Taliesin
West in 1937 largely of “desert masonry”: local rock set in wooden
forms and bound by a mixture of cement and desert sand. The
property includes a drafting studio, the original residence, dining
area, three theaters, a workshop, residences for Taliesin Fellowship
apprentices and houses the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and
the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

YORK, Pa. – Original comic strip art continues to establish its position
alongside ne art in the collector marketplace, with the latest proof
coming at Hake’s Auctions pop culture rarities event. Amongst the
highlights of the $2.7 million sale at the end of July was a selection of
six lots of original concept art created in the late 1970s for a proposed
Star Wars daily newspaper comic strip (opposite page). Drawn by
legendary comic strip artist Al Williamson (1931-2020) as part of a
series of twelve strips, the artworks never saw publication.
Offered consecutively, the six lots sold for $171,505, against pre-
auction estimates of a combined $100,000.
“Six of the artworks were gifted to George Lucas, while the
other six were given to Star Wars marketing genius Charles Lip-
pincott (1939-2020),” explained Alex Winter, president of Hake’s
Auctions. “For more than forty years Mr Lippincott’s six artworks
remained with his family until they were consigned to Hake’s by
his widow earlier this year. It was a great result.”
One of the most sought-after of original comic book artworks
in the sale was the Gil Kane/Dick Giordano seven-panel
art for Page 27 of Marvel Premiere #15, published in May
1974, which sold for $20,350. This issue marked the debut
of the popular Marvel martial artist/superhero Iron Fist.

Edith Head (1897-1981) is America’s best-known and

most successful Hollywood designer. A winner of eight Academy
Awards for Costume Design, Head dened the style of classic Hol-
lywood with her striking work at Paramount and Universal.
She dressed some of Hollywood’s most beautiful movie stars,
including Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Lana
Turner and Marlene Dietrich. Her work, however, was not limited
to women. She designed wardrobes for such dashing leading men
as Cary Grant, Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, to name a few.
Head’s gown designs for Ingrid Berman in the 1946 suspense
classic, Notorious, was her rst collaboration with director Alfred
Hitchcock, a partnership that lasted for eight movies.
All told, Head designed costumes for about 500 lms and was
nominated thirty-ve times for an Academy Award. She also be-
came a recognizable personality in her own right thanks to her
distinctive personal style including her signature glasses and blunt
personality, which inspired the character of Edna Mode in the Pixar
animated hit, The Incredibles.
While she designed some of the most eye-catching and breath-
taking outts in movie history, Head only liked to wear four colors
herself: black, white, beige and brown.
A collection of Head’s striking design sketches recently sold at
Heritage Auctions. A sample of her work follows.
