5E Lesson Plan

Teacher: Christina Davis

Date: 2/18/2024
Subject / grade level: Types of Motion/kindergarten
Materials:
Objects for exploration-balls, cars, blocks, stuffed toys, and other objects students can choose from (markers, crayons,
legos, etc)
Paper for Friction activity-construction, corrugated, wax
Journals

GA Science GSE: SKP2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and describe different types of
motion a. Plan and carry out an investigation to determine the relationship between an object’s physical
attributes and its resulting motion (straight, circular, back and forth, fast and slow, and motionless) when a force is
applied. (Examples could include toss, drop, push, and pull.

Additional Content Area GSE:

SKP1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe objects in terms of the materials they are made of and
their physical attributes
ELAGSEKW2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which
they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic

Lesson objective(s): Students will determine the relationship between an object’s physical attributes and its resulting
motion when a force is applied

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

Illustrate and label
Picture cards of vocabulary terms

ENGAGEMENT
Introduction
• Watch https://www.generationgenius.com/videolessons/pushes-and-pulls/
• Guiding Questions:
• How can I move an object? When moving the object, did I push or pull the object?

● Students will roll a small car back and forth practicing push and pull
● Students answer the following questions:
o Did you push the car?
o Did you pull the car? (some may not realize the motion of bringing the car back to themselves is a pull)
o The car was easy to push and pull. Can you think of other objects that you can easily push or pull?
o What about objects that would be difficult to push or pull

EXPLORATION

● How objects can move

o Watch https://youtu.be/nIvePkFzaMw
o Question- In what ways can objects move?
o Refer to anchor chart or Quizlet flashcards https://quizlet.com/884319748/how-objects-move-flash-
cards/?i=5orpfp&x=1jqt

● Predictions
o 4 objects: ball, car, block, stuffed toy
o Students will predict how objects will move (fast, slow, straight, zigzag)
• Exploration
o Students will explore how each object moves
o Students will document their findings, noting if their predictions were correct or not
• Individual Exploration
o Students will choose 2 more objects to move (any object they choose)
o Students will predict how objects will move
o Students will explore how each object moves
o Students will document their findings, noting if their predictions were correct or not

EXPLANATION
● Students will explain why their predictions were correct. They will describe what they noticed when their
predictions were not correct.
● Guiding Questions
o How can you describe motion?
o What is the relationship between force and motion?
o What did you notice about the characteristics of the object and how it moves?
● Discuss how each of the objects moved. Students will illustrate/label these in their journal
● Watch https://youtu.be/qTEvLIPzW28

ELABORATION
● Introduce the vocabulary-Friction
● Friction lesson
o Lay down construction paper, corrugated paper, and wax paper
o Students will predict which car will travel the furthest
o Push cars across each paper
o Students will record their observations
o Discuss the results

● Watch https://youtu.be/9ePpWrvOXGY
● Discuss how friction can make objects move differently
o Students will give examples

EVALUATION

5E Lesson Plan

● Students will journal their observations of objects they notice throughout the week. Students will illustrate and
write what they noticed
o Differentiation: illustrate and label, vocabulary picture cards
