In the process of completing my School Base Assessment I was granted the

help of many and would like to take the time out to thank and show my

appreciation of their help. Firstly, I would like to thank the Lord for giving me the

strength, focus and courage to press on throughout the journey it took to get my

School Base Assessment done, Secondly, I would like to thank my aunt, Navette

Barham for assisting me in typing up this SBA and thirdly, I would like to thank

my friends for giving their opinions and thought on my chosen topic.

PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
The candidate chose the theme, ‘Social Problems’, with the main focus of

“The Causes of Child Abuse". This research topic was chosen because, I found this

topic to be remarkably interesting mainly because children in my surroundings

are being scolded or abused by parents, relatives and even strangers which

should not be happening. The candidate will benefit from this research in six

ways.

Firstly, interacting with new information will help to build and expand the

vocabulary, as an English Language student. This research will also

sharpen/develop oral and writing skills. Finally, the information gathered will lay

the foundation for reflection as well as preparation for the oral presentation. It is

the candidate intention to collect data related to Child Abuse using the videos

from the internet, newspaper articles and pictures. The data collected will be

used as evidence that Child Abuse must be stopped.

Reflection 1
Before knowing all the facts about child abuse in Jamaica, I thought that

children who were being abused were just faking and were inconsiderate of their

families and friends’ feelings. However, after reading thoroughly throughout my

data pieces, I was rather shocked by the results I got.

I know realize that there are several factors that contributes to ‘Child Abuse’

in Jamaica. My data pieces highlighted stress and lack of support, alcohol and

drugs along with domestic violence as the main causes of Child Abuse in Jamaica.

These pieces has therefore changed my thinking since I no longer believe that

children who have been/being abused are dishonest or inconsiderate, but are rather

hurt and in need of help.

Given that I’m now educated on the causes of Child Abuse, I believe I

should use my knowledge to help in reducing their problem. One action I would

take to help children who are victims of child abuse, is to form a program/group

consisting of parents to talk about the negative effects that child abuse has on

children as well as strategies to reduce child abuse such as: Taking parent time out

when a feeling of stress or any feeling that could end up causing child abuse, being

a nourishing parent and report suspected Child Abuse or Child Neglection.

Reflection 2
After carefully analyzing my data pieces, I have observed the writer’s
intention for writing his/her piece as well as the writer’s use of languages for
him/her to achieve their purpose.

My first data piece, an article titled “Beating Children causes more harm
than good”, relays to the abuse, neglect and exploitation of child abuse. The
writer's purpose for writing such an article is to inform to the public on the main
causes of child abuse. The writer used a variety of language techniques, the two
most dominant were facts and the use of formal language. The writer used those
two main techniques to convince the reader that their information was trustworthy.

My second data piece titled “Cause Factors", it speaks about some factors
that can lead to child abuse. Firstly, Lack of support to the psychological
mistreatment when their caregivers or parents are under stress. Parents find it
difficult to deal with the emotional needs of a child, especially when they face
stressful situations like Divorces, financial worries and job-related problems. The
editor used Facts and simple language to achieve their purpose. The editor used
these techniques to stir the audience emotion and by having them to put themselves
in the victim's position.

My third data piece, an article titled “What causes child abuse “speaks about
the understanding and the prevention of child abuse. The language used was formal
language and facts, there was also the use of ellipse which created spence in the
article. This made the article engaging because of the impact that it had on those
people lives.
Plan of Oral Investigation
Group Written Report
The researchers focus on the theme Social Issues. On some specific days, the researchers met

and discussed each of their data pieces. After going through each data piece the researchers

decided to come up with two research questions.

1. What are some causes of child abuse

2. What are some effects of human trafficking?

The researchers have decided on which to text via WhatsApp in our group to find out what

suitable data piece could answer the questions. In the end, the researchers decided to and chose

three data pieces that would answer the questions. The data pieces were informative, accurate,

and straightforward. The pieces that were chosen by the researcher in answering the questions

are a poem titled “Taken”: A spoken word by Mia Christopherson and was published on May

22, 2019. An article titled “beating children causes more harm than good, new evidence

suggests” by Jodi-Ann Gilpin and was published on November 5, 2018, and another artile. The

researchers found the bulk of their information on the internet.

The two articles by Jodi-Ann and the one titled “What causes child abuse”, gave intuition

as it regards our first question. According to both of those pieces, one of the main causes of

Child Abuse is frustration and stress. They both can lead to depression for both the child and

caregiver. The article speaks about how frustration is the main reason that drives caregivers to

beat their children, Pediatrics showed that beating children can lead to aggression, brain changes,

and suicidal behavior in adulthood. The pamphlet speaks about the many causes of Child Abuse.

To know the causes of Human Trafficking, the researchers used the information found in the

poem. Based on what was seen in the poem, several consequences are linked to Human
Trafficking. Such as what the victim went through. They explained how victims were abused

sexually, emotionally, and mentally. How unreal the situation felt to them, the constant state of

panic they were in, the bruises, the scars, the cuts, and the burns. How terrifying and horrific the

situation is and how badly they were treated. Victims were planning on raising awareness to stop

Human trafficking.
