Overview

The seminar exposed nurses to the concept of modern diabetes management. The teaching

and learning process in the case study included practical demonstrations, case studies, and

interactive sessions. The seminar also offered nurses a good opportunity to acquire knowledge

regarding the administration of nursing care to patients with a complex form of diabetes. The

nurses who attended the seminar acquired knowledge of:

 Nutritional management

 Complex form of diabetes

 Handling patients with a complex form of diabetes

 Complication prevention

 Managing and measuring blood glucose levels

 Current insulin administration protocols

 Lifestyle factors leading to diabetes

 Patient-nurse collaboration in management of diabetes

 Patient self-care process for diabetes management

 Latest gadgets and tools for diabetes management

Problem

Diabetes has become prevalent in the U.S. and other parts of the world in the 21st

Century. In the United States, approximately 34.2 million people have diabetes. Diabetes

currently occurs as a severe health problem with many economic and social consequences on the

nations and their citizens (American Diabetes Association, 2020). Diabetes costs the U.S. federal

government around $327 billion per annum, whereby $90 billion is the productivity reduction

cost while $237 billion occur as direct medical costs (Vissarion, Malliarou, Theofilou & Zyga,

2014). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes kills approximately

79,535 people per annum. Although diabetes leads to fatalities, loss of limbs, kidney failures,

blindness and cardiovascular diseases, it is manageable and preventable. Nurses are assigned the

leading role in the prevention and management of diabetes through complication minimization

and public education. Nurses, therefore, require advanced, quality and up to date education on

evidence-based practice in the management of diabetes.

Solution

The seminar gave nurses a general update on the modern strategy of diabetes

management with regards to the improvement of the welfare and satisfaction of patients. The key

modern strategies of management of diabetes is an evidence-based practice, collaboration, and

ethical decision making. Firstly, evidence-based practice in diabetes nursing management

process involves collection, analysis and implementation of study results to facilitate the

improvement of patient outcomes, the work environment, and clinical practice. The American

Nurses Association holds that nursing intervention programs should integrate practical decisions.

Evidence-based practice in diabetes nursing management enables nurses to provide cost-efficient

and high-quality services to patients. Secondly, a collaborative approach to the nursing

management of diabetes is designed to increase the engagement level of the patient. The

collaboration process in diabetes management creates two-way communication between nurses

and patients, which facilitates sharing of medical and progress information. The collaboration

enables the nurses to educate patient with diabetes about the right self-care strategies.

Furthermore, progress information enables nurses to make decisions regarding insulin

administration protocols. The self-management strategies for diabetes management sent to the

patients includes dieting and exercise. Finally, the seminar exposed nurses to ethics in nursing

practice. Cultural competence and ethnic/racial equality were cited as effective ways of

improving patient outcome and increasing participation.

Opportunity

Attending the diabetes nursing management seminar enabled me to grow professionally

in several ways. Firstly, the seminar enlightened me about the modern strategies of assessing

patients with diabetes. Secondly, the seminar enlightened me about the significance of the

evidence-based practice of diabetes nursing management. Thirdly, I was able to learn about the

modern tools of diabetes assessment like monofilaments, pathology and blood glucose meters.

Fourth, the seminar exposed me to the process of preventing the escalation of diabetes

symptoms. Fifth, I acquired knowledge about the impact of lifestyle factors in the diabetes

management process in relation to patient education and nurse-patient collaboration (Bekemeier

& Butterfield, 2005). Finally, an in-depth review of the American Nurses Association’s Code of

Ethics enabled me to learn about the strategies of increasing the level of nurse-patient

collaboration, ethical decision making and equitable intervention environment for all people.
