Diabetes type 2 is a chronic condition that affects the way the body metabolizes glucose. With
this type of diabetes, the body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn’t produce insulin to
maintain normal glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes was known to have an adult-onset diabetes, but
today, more children are being diagnosed with the disorder, and is due to the rise in childhood
obesity. Currently there’s no cure to diabetes type 2 but with weight loss, proper lifestyle
changes and medication therapy can help reverse/manage it.

Diabetes type 2 is a complex and chronic illness that requires continuous medical care with
multifactorial risk-reduction strategies beyond glycemic control. Ongoing patient self-
management education and support are critical to preventing acute complications and reducing
the risk of long-term complications.

Treatment and care should be individualized and should include the patient in planning and
managing their condition. Future planning is very important in reducing severity of
complications or the condition itself. With the proper education of the nurses regarding the
current condition of the patients, they will be able to define emergencies associated with
diabetes, including profound hypoglycemia or coma. Significant others are also a big part in the
management of patient care. All family members should be taught the necessary steps in
administration of medicines and the activation of the emergency medical system to prevent
injury or complications to the patient.

The backbone of diabetes management is the delivery of appropriate and tailored lifestyle advice.
The advancement of technology today provides enormous information about many things
including diabetes. A search on social media sites could lead to an array of conflicting advice
about diet and activity schedules advocated for the prevention, remission and treatment of
diabetes. Therefore, it is important that nurses give advice or educate people with diabetes based
on evidence and research so that people can make appropriate and most importantly safe lifestyle
changes.

To unlock the key to behavior change and to evoke lifestyle adjustment, nursing assessment for
any emotional and psychological factors are very important in order to therapeutically engage
and support the client.
