BRIAN TAI
URBAN SYMPHONY
Capturing Rhythms of Urban Life en plein aire
Brian Tai captures the vibrancy of urban landscapes en plein aire (painting outdoors) through his keen eye and decisive
brushwork. A familiar face often spotted on the busy sidewalks of streets in Klang Valley, Penang, and Singapore, Brian
embraces the spontaneity of plein air watercolour in this showcase of 30 impressionistic works being presented in two
segments. In the initial segment, Klang-born Brian captures the splendour of light and shade that gives life to the
architecture and streetscapes as he sees them and frames them for posterity in one of the most challenging mediums
that is watercolour. Each stroke and wash captures a nuanced snapshot of the ever-evolving urban landscape as a
historical milestone, now immortalized through the artist’s lens.

In the subsequent segment, Brian taps into the urban pulse - the people and their activities that constitute the soul of the
locale. Transporting you into the intimate spaces of ordinary lives, he captures common people navigating the intricacies
of daily existence, whether immersed in daily work or enjoying moments of leisure.
From busy hawkers at the peak of their day, to crowds partaking in religious festivities or of people engaged in quiet
conversations, Brian intricately unveils the diverse and colourful sides and soul of urban life. “I am inspired by the things
going on around me when I paint plein air. The noise, weather, nuances of light and shade, all excite me. I try to capture
all these in this challenging medium so that I can infuse soul into my works,” said the artist, who admitted he was
influenced by urban sketching during the early days of his artistic journey.
In loose and expressive impressionistic styles, Brian brings the viewer on an insightful journey of rediscovery, guiding us
to familiar places and people that we have come across, forgotten, and now reacquainted with. “For example, consider
the well-known Hup Soon Yong Tau Foo stall in Petaling Jaya,” Brian explains. “Yong Tau Foo happens to be my favourite
dish, and watching the skilled workers in action stirs strong emotions in me. This compels me to capture their dynamic
movements with an impressionistic touch, recreating the ambiance of the place in my artwork.”
