WHY SOME PEOPLE REFUSE TO HELP STREET BEGGARS IN HO CHI MINH CITY

We see people who need help all the time. Going around Ho Chi Minh City, we
can easily find beggars along the streets. They can be adults, children, men or women
and they often sit along the sidewalk. In fact, it is very difficult for anyone to ignore a
disabled person or a poor child begging for a small amount of money. On many
occasions, there are some people who choose to help, but some others might decide not
to help beggars for a number of reasons.
One of the reasons could be that they are not enough conditions to help. For
example, a girl who has to work to earn money to pay off debt cannot help a beggar.
Or at the end of the month, you are running out of money but see a beggar on the street.
In these cases, it is clear that we do not even have enough money to live well, so it is
normal to prioritize ourselves before being able to help others.
Second of all, people may not help beggars in the streets because they are afraid
of being scammed. There have been many cases of beggars who are too lazy to work
and pretend to be poor. They take advantage of our kindness, our compassion to ask
for benefits. Even some bad guys organize beggars to get benefits. They used old
people, orphans and disabled people to make money for them. If beggars do not earn
enough money, they will be beaten and starved. So helping beggars means we are
feeding the bad guys. This is still regularly reported in many newspapers and social
networks. They have made society look bad and we lost faith in people.
The last reason I want to talk about is the attitude of beggars. Not all beggars have
good attitudes. One time, I went with my friends to give charity food to the homeless
and beggars on the street. At first, we were welcome to give food to them, but then they
asked for more. We decline and explain that each person should only take one pack so
that the rest can be shared with many others. After being rejected they became
aggressive, cursing and threatening to hit us. The situation was very dangerous and we
asked for the help of the police. After that, I really wondered if I should keep helping
beggars or not.
Overall, the decision to help a beggar or not depends on many factors. Conditions,
beliefs and attitudes are just three of many reasons people decide not to help beggars.
However, besides these reasons, there are still beggars who are really poor and need
help that we can not refuse. All we need to do is listen to our hearts and do what we
think is right.
