Create a Fantastically Beastly Event Space

In the wizarding world, a witch or wizard who studies magical beasts is called a Magizoologist. Here
are some ideas to help you get in a Magizoologist mood and create a fantastically beastly event space for
your Harry Potter Book Night event.

1. HAGRID’S HUT
Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. He also teaches the Care of Magical
Creatures classes at Hogwarts and is fascinated by rare (and dangerous) beasts.
Students meet outside Hagrid’s hut for Care of Magical Creatures class. The classes often happen outside,
in surrounding paddocks, or on the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest.
Here are some decorating ideas:
1. A sign reading HAGRID’S HUT.
2. A large wooden table covered with large teapots, massive mugs, and plates of rock cakes.
3. A large iron cage with copies of The Monster Book of Monsters in it.
4. A long table with twigs (Bowtruckles) on it.
5. Use yellow, orange, and red paper to make a crackling fire. Set a black dragon’s egg inside.
6. Design a cover for Dragon-Breeding for Pleasure and Profit and set it on a chair by the fire along
with copies of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
7. Set Fang’s dog basket on the floor and hang pictures of hams and pheasants from the ceiling.
8. Harry and his friends study many beasts in their Care of Magical Creatures classes. Write
the beasts’ names on a large blackboard: Blast-Ended Skrewts, Bowtruckles, Crups,
Flobberworms, Hippogriffs, Knarls, Kneazles, Porlocks, Nifflers, salamanders, and unicorns.
9. Don’t forget to include Hagrid’s battered pink umbrella!
2. A MAGIZOOLOGIST’S LIBRARY
To recreate your own corner of a Magizoologist’s library, gather a collection of books with jackets you’ve
made featuring these titles:
• The Monster Book of Monsters
• Dragon Species of Great Britain and Ireland
• From Egg to Inferno, A Dragon Keeper’s Guide
• Dragon-Breeding for Pleasure and Profit
• Dreadful Denizens of the Deep
• Fowl or Foul? A Study of Hippogriff Brutality
Don’t forget to include your copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them from the Hogwarts Library,
as well as the newly illustrated edition.

3. HOGWARTS HOUSE AREAS

Create areas for Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin and decorate them with house colors.
Hang up banners with the house names: Hufflepuff (yellow and black), Ravenclaw (blue and bronze),
Slytherin (emerald green and silver), and Gryffindor (scarlet and gold).
More information about Hogwarts houses can be found at harrypotterbooknight.com.

4. HOGWARTS HOUSE POINTS BOARD

Throughout the event, why not award house points to participating guests or teams? You may want to
use a large chalkboard, whiteboard, or flip chart as your scoreboard.

5. SORTING HAT AND CHAIR

Make your own Sorting Hat by customizing a witch’s hat. Use folded newspaper glued to the hat to
create the eyes and mouth. Now paint the whole hat black. On the night, place the hat on a chair ready
for the Sorting Ceremony.

6. OWL POST
Write the names of Hogwarts students—and/or those attending your event—on a selection of cream
envelopes and then suspend them from the ceiling, using threads of cotton, or place them on shelves or
around a fireplace to create the illusion of the arrival of the owl postal service.
If you have any plush owl toys, you could even attach the envelopes to their beaks for maximum effect.

7. HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WITCH OR WIZARD?

Recreate a “Have you seen this witch or wizard?” poster featuring . . . you! Cut out a cardboard frame or
make one out of wood. Paint “Have you seen this witch or wizard?” across the top. Your guests can pose
in the frame and be a famous witch or wizard for the night!
Remember to tag your photos with #HarryPotterBookNight!
Conjure Up Some Wizard Treats
If you’re planning to serve snacks, put a spell (i.e., a label or sign) on these ordinary Muggle
refreshments to transform them into magical treats from the wizarding world!

TRANSFORM . . . INTO . . .
Cream Sodas or Root Beer Floats Butterbeer
Still or Sparkling Water Gillywater
Apple Juice or Orange Soda Pumpkin Juice
Lollypops Acid Pops
Licorice Sticks Licorice Wands
Jelly Beans Bernie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans
Red-Hot Cinnamon Candies Pepper Imps
Cupcakes Cauldron Cakes

Let the Wizarding Fun Begin!

Activities
Use these games and activities for a fantastic Harry Potter Book Night event filled with fun and magic!
To begin your event, we recommend starting off with a Sorting Ceremony. Use the suggested ideas on
the following Sorting Ceremony activity sheet as a guide to help get your guests in a magical mood.
If you have more than 30 guests, you may want to split up participants into groups based on the four
Hogwarts houses that they’ve been sorted into—and run several activities at once.
Book Night
Activities

SORTING CEREMONY
We suggest you begin your Harry Potter Book Night event with the Sorting Ceremony to sort your
guests into the four Hogwarts houses.
If you have a group of more than 30 guests, consider how to adapt this activity to suit your number of
would-be wizards and witches. You may want to assign houses to classes or year groups prior to the
night, or you could have more than one Sorting Hat to speed up the process.

YOU WILL NEED:

• The Sorting Hat (Any magical-looking hat will do)
• A container with house names on pieces of paper
• A chair

WHAT TO DO:
Prepare by placing pieces of paper with
GRYFFINDOR, HUFFLEPUFF, RAVENCLAW, and
SLYTHERIN into a box or container. You’ll need one
piece of paper for each child attending.
You can read the Sorting Hat song to get people
in the mood (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,
Chapter 7, pages 125–126), or you could print out
a large copy of the words and have everyone sing it
together.
One by one get your guests to sit on the chair and
place the Sorting Hat on their head, while they select
a piece of paper with their house name from the
container.
You can find out more about each of the houses and
their characteristics at harrypotterbooknight.com.

You can play as many rounds of this game
as you like; just make sure each member
of the team has a chance to be a Wizard
Actor or Wizard Artist—see below.
For each round, select one player from the team. This
player then decides whether they are a Wizard Actor
or a Wizard Artist.
The Wizard Actor or Wizard Artist pulls out one piece of
paper from the container and they have one minute to
describe or draw their beast to their team without
speaking. Wizard Actors can use charades and
Wizard Artists must draw their beast.

ON GUARD!
A Magizoologist needs to be aware of how to protect themselves from, or placate, the magical beasts
they study, just in case things get out of hand!
Divide the group into teams of three or four and give each team a set of these cards—you will need to
make copies and cut them out ahead of time. Have the groups match the defense to the beast it would
work against.

CREATE YOUR OWN FANTASTIC BEAST!

For this activity you will need a collection of craft materials such as old newspapers, colored paper,
colored pencils, crayons, tape, and scissors.
What magical abilities do you admire the most? If you could breed your own magical beast, would
it have the power of invisibility like the Demiguise? The ability to breathe fire like a dragon? Would
you like it to be able to locate gold coins like the Niffler? Or perhaps you would like it to have
lots of arms and legs like the Doxy, powerful wings like the griffin, or astounding intellect like the
sphinx?
Form groups of twos or threes and, using the craft equipment and materials listed above, make your
own fantastic beasts. If you like, groups could present the fantastic beasts they have created and take
everyone through the beast’s magical characteristics.

COLOR IN THE DRAGON!

Dragons are giant-winged, fire-breathing reptilian creatures. Widely regarded as terrifying yet awe-
inspiring, they can be found all over the world and are frequently referred to in Asian and medieval
European folklore. Able to fly and breathe fire through their nostrils, they are one of the most
dangerous and hardest to conceal creatures in the wizarding world.
