The argumentative essay “ The effects of Smoking ” states an ongoing issue throughout the
world: how smoking affects the lives of many.

In the introduction, the author introduced the main issue of the essay when the author
stated “According to numerous medical studies, smoking not only causes innumerable health
problems for a person but also for every single non-smoker close by”, and by stating this “Even
though people carry on debating the pros and cons of smoking, the reality is that a ban is the
most fitting and logical decision in the case of smoking in public areas.” lead me to believe that
this is the thesis statement, making it direct and clear.

The author's first reason was the fact that smoking can cause bronchial infections and
asthmatic attacks to both smokers and non-smokers, supporting his claim that smoking shoud
be banned. The author supported this reason by presenting some statistics of over 1 million
people in the US alone who suffers from chronic sinusitis, asthma, etc.

The second reason of the author is how smoking can affect the environment too.
Presenting some details on how smoking can pollute the environment “All the plastic filters,
cigarette butts, and other elements of smoked cigarettes are most likely to pollute waterways,
soil, and beaches.” the author said. Supporting his second reason, the author gives out recent
studies that demonstrated that cigarette residue and nicotine are harmful to fish and other
microorganisms.

His third reason is how smoking is a fiscal trap to those who are addicted to smoking. He
mentioned that CDC reported “The financial burden that smoking places on individuals keeps on
rising, with approximately $193 billion spent yearly in the US.” supporting his third reason.

His last reason is how smoking can speed up the signs of aging, the author presented the
study of the American Academy of dermatology where it states that regular smoking can
actually speeds up the aging process.

Overall, the presented evidences, structure, the thesis statement, and reasons for each are
relevant and did not go off topic too much. The author used less transitional devices in each
paragraph which lead me to confusion me a bit but it was understandable. Because of this the
author made his stand very clear and agreeable.
